if you want to buy sony then i suggest you buy BenQ1640, why? because BenQ is the maker of Sony mechanism now so it means it uses a Philips Nexperia chip.. see it for yourself.. sa external look you will see the identical curvarture.... the DCS (direct cooling system) is use now by Sony... or you can check the review site.. cdfreaks.com

I have 1640 connected temporarily in USB controller mode, cause its cheaper than an external type...

tolstoi is right, if philips build a new chip sa benQ RD na padulong for testing, after success it will go mass production and license other DVD maker like NUTech, Sony.. also a lot of OEM uses BenQ DVDRW 1625
