    Default Erotica: Porn or Literature

I have not read works on any of the authors mentioned above. I don't know of the purpose of erotica. If you have read any, do you need to read between the lines, or are the words/phrases just too simple and can easily stimulate arousal from the reader?

Or shall we say that they are just artistic pornographers? or artistic vouyers?

sorry I had to revive this pretty old topic. I "bumped" into this from one of the more recently locked topics. I also was browsing the web for books of Anais Nin. I've been longing to put my hands (and eyes) on any of her books.

the only erotica book i've read was Lolita by Nabokov and I've read magazines referring to Nin's type of writing so I was always on the lookout for her books.

When we say porn is intended to cause sexual excitement, doesn't erotica?

and another, books by Anne Rice always have this "veiled sensuality" in it. Is that considered erotica, too?

I've also read The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by A. N. Roquelaure. IS this book porn or erotica?

    This is a tough question.

If by definition porn seeks to excite sexually a reader/viewer then it is porn. Likewise, I think erotica still falls within the category of porn ONLY it is decked in literary finesse (again base on the definition given).

Like you, I have a few other questions too. Suppose a novel covers only a page or two of erotic or sexually provocative narratives, would it make the novel entirely pornographic? What about Catcher in the Rye (JD Salinger) which centers on the angst of youth yet uses liberally profane language and sexually provocative lines?

Honestly, it's hard to tell the difference.

I'm no expert but here's my personal definition

Porn - The stimulation of sexual desire brought about by complete, visual, and auditory means.

Erotica - The stimulation of sexual desire brought about by sometimes incomplete, imagined, or descriptive means.

But I digress. Adult mag with word balloons regardless whether the images are drawn or photographed is a piece of literature.
