Red Bull ships Alvarez to Purefoods

Saturday, November 1, 2008
Red Bull dealt another talented player in Rich Alvarez yesterday, dealing the 2004 Rookie of the Year awardee to Purefoods in exchange for a future draft right.
“We’d been after Rich since we lost Marc Pingris and Ray Evangelista – players who can defend the wing and at the same time contribute offensively. We’re happy Red Bull finally gave us Rich,” said Purefoods governor Rene Pardo.
At Purefoods, Alvarez, 28, has been reunited with fellow Ateneo Blue Eagles Enrico Villanueva and Paolo Bugia and other old teammates in Topex Robinson, James Yap, Roger Yap and Peter June Simon.
Red Bull gained Purefoods’ first round pick in the 2011 draft after sealing the deal.
Alvarez was the latest blue-chip player given away by Red Bull after Kerby Raymundo, Willie Miller, Villanueva, Lordy Tugade, Larry Fonacier, Junthy Valenzuela and Mick Pennisi.
The trade was completed Thursday night but Alvarez wasn’t tapped to play yesterday since he hasn’t worked out with the Giants.
Alvarez returned from an ACL injury in the Fiesta Conference last season, averaging 6.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists.
Red Bull had barely started its training for the 2007-08 campaign when Alvarez suffered an ACL tear keeping him out of the Philippine Cup.
Meanwhile, national coach Yeng Guiao issued an apology for his unsportsmanlike gesture in the Red Bull-Talk n Text game Wednesday.
“I would like to apologize to the PBA, basketball fans and the watching public. I offer no excuses and take full responsibility for my actions. I only ask for the understanding of all concerned,” said Guiao in a statement.
He was fined P20,000.
“In the light of a greater task and heavier responsibility at hand as the national coach, I commit to avoid such unnecessary and unwanted acts in the future,” said Guiao, after his misconduct particularly the dirty finger sign he pointed to the referees while drawing his second technical that led to his ejection from the court.

RAIN OR SHINE SHOCKS TALK ‘N TEXT; PUREFOODS WINS IN OT
SOLOMON Mercado and Gabe Norwood joined forces in lifting Rain or Shine to a 104-96 win over Talk 'N Text Friday night in the 2008-09 KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Mercado and Norwood provided the huge plays in the closing minutes to thwart the last-ditch stand by the Tropang Texters and preserved the Elasto Painters' franchise-best fourth win in the All-Filipino tournament.
Mercado led Rain or Shine with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field while Norwood added 16, including a thunderous follow-up slam that proved to be the dagger for TNT.
After leading by as much as 21 points, Talk 'N Text slowly got back in the game courtesy of Mark Cardona.
Staring a 72-87 deficit with 9:12 left in the game, Cardona anchored a 13-0 blast to close in at 85-87 with 3:25 remaining.
The Rain or Shine's rookies took charge as Mercado completed a three-point play off Cardona to start a pivotal 7-0 swing capped by Norwood's floater for a 94-85 advantage with 3:09 left.
But the Tropang Texters still refused to give up as they threatened again at 90-96 before Norwood awakened the crowd with a follow-up slam off the missed jumper by Jay-R Reyes to give his team a 98-90 cushion with exactly a minute left.
"This is a test of character for our team. For a young team like us to pick up a win like this, it's something else, but I have to thank also veteran players like Rob (Wainwright) and Denver (Lopez) for giving way to the younger guys," said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia.
"We're starting strong this conference, we hope to get better each game," he added.
Cardona led Tropang Texters with 27 points while Jimmy Alapag added 17 markers. TNT, after a 2-0 start, has now lost four of its last five games to slide down in the team standings with 3-4 slate.
In the second game, Purefoods Tender Juicy banked on the heroics of James Yap to escape with a 108-105 overtime win over Air21 to improve its mark to 3-4.
Playing with a bad back, Yap hit a difficult three-pointer at the left deep corner to beat the buzzer and send the game in overtime at 97-all.
In the extra inning, the Giants scored the first six points of the game to take control of the match and Yap had two crucial rebounds that preserved the comeback win by Purefoods.
Kerby Raymundo finished with a career-high 37 points while Yap added 31 for the Giants, who ended the Express' three-game winning streak. Air21 dropped to 3-4.
Homer Se and Wynnie Arboleda each had 25 points for the Express.

Coke win ends R'Bull win streak
11/02/2008 | 06:17 PM
MANILA, Philippines - Asi Taulava scored 17 points and the Coca-Cola Tigers won 97-92 over the Red Bull Barakos in the KFC-Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup Sunday at The Araneta Coliseum.
The two teams ended up with the same 3-4 records.
PBA: Asi, Coke bigs do damage in win vs R'Bull
11/02/2008 | 07:39 PM
MANILA, Philippines - Coca-Cola came into the game Sunday as the bigger club. In the end, the Tigers came out as the better team as well.
Coke shook off a lousy start by going to their tall men to win 97-92 in the KFC Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Asi Taulava tallied 17 points and nine rebounds, as Coke's starting frontline combined for 42 points and 28 rebounds, better than Red Bull's 29-20 output.
It was Coke's third win in seven games, and second in three outings with new coach Kenneth Duremdes.
"At this point, the team is making a huge turnaround in terms of what our expectations are," Duremdes said.
"They want to show they're determined to win even though there have been changes on the team."
Nothing new in the Tigers' win against one of the league's hottest teams. They went down low as often as they could to expose the Bulls' lack of ceiling.
Trailing 29-25 after the first quarter, Coke went on a 35-18 outburst in the second to go up 60-47 and never look back.
Nic Belasco finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, and Mark Telan added nine and 10 for the Tigers who outrebounded the Bulls 60-43.
Starting playmaker Alex Cabagnot had another solid outing for Coke with 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Larry Rodriguez came off the bench to score 15 points for Red Bull, which lost for the first time after stringing up three straight wins.
