Hey CrasHBURN, you have the 70-200 f2.8L IS right? I'm trying to decide between that lens and the new f4L IS. If price is not an issue, would you ever give up the f2.8 for a smaller and lighter f4 version?

@laagan - i have the f4L non IS version, its a great lens and the IS version of this is a very significant add on to this model specially when shooting at the long end. but since the entry price of the f4 IS version somehow is close to the f2.8 version, i will personally go for the f2.8. this will really come in handy when you need a faster shutter speed in some occasions that the f4 may not be able to give. yes its heavy, i've used it ones for half a day... but youll get used to it. if the f4IS will have a tag of not more than $900, i will probably stay with the f4 model. but since your question was if the price was not an issue... i would say go for the f2.8 and do some weight lifting and you will get used to this heavy lens ... and btw, i might be selling my f4L, i'm saving for the 100-400LIS for a longer reach hehehe

Thanks edwin_sn for your comments. As of now I'm leaning towards the f2.8 version. Actually I was originally choosing between the 70-200 f2.8IS and the 100-400LIS and decided to get the 70-200. But now that the 70-200 f4.0IS is out and many folks have said the optical quality is the same as the non-IS version (which is great) and even sharper than the f2.8IS...this caused a new confusion for me. But I don't think I'm ready to give up a faster lens vs. a lighter one.

OTOH, like you I'll probably get the 100-400LIS someday. I just need a good justification for it, like safari in Botswana.

laagan: If price is not an issue, get the f2.8L IS. It is the best telephoto lens available. 70-200 f4L, not good in low light, its cheap and sharp though. Next would be EF 70-200mm f2.8L and 70-200mm f4L IS, 1 stop (2.8 ) or 4 stops (4L IS). If you can't afford the 2.8L IS, better get the lighter 4L IS. With 2.8, you can have an advantage of using a faster shutter speeds. Never mind the camera shake, since we are comparing both lenses with IS. In optical clarity, AF speed and sharpness, the 2.8L IS is better in all. Moist resistant too.

Compared to Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR, this one's cheaper! hahaha!
