    USC, UV in finals
    By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 8:19 am | Monday, December 3rd, 2012

The University of San Carlos (USC) and the University of the Visayas (UV) raised Cebu’s flag up high as they sealed finals berths in their respective divisions in the national finals of the Milo-backed Best Twin Tournament at the Capiz gym in Roxas City.

The Small Basketeers of the Philippines (SBP) squad of the USC, a team playing both skill and heart in the face of the tragic death of their teammate JV Cenabre, swept the rest of their assignments in the elimination round after they beat, Don Bosco Academy, 57-47;and Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), 52-57.

The Passerelle team of the UV, on the other hand, shrugged off the loss to La Salle Greenhills the other day and vented its ire upon Holy Child School of Davao, 65-42, and the Holy Angel University (HAU) of Pampanga, 49-45.

Against ADDU, USC was in control of the lead in the first half before its opponents answered back in the third canto to take a 36-31 lead into the payoff period. Refusing to give in, the Baby Warriors retaliated by going on a 17-4 run that saw them at one point score 13 unanswered points for a 48-40 lead. At the helm of that rally were Jholo Pakanna and Neon Chavez.

But disaster struck USC as one by one, its stars fouled out. Sensing blood, ADDU came back to within four, but Clint Octaviano stepped up big in crunch time with two timely baskets that put down the uprising and seal the win for the Cebuanos.

USC was taking on the mighty La Salle Greenhills in the championship game, which was still being played in as of this writing. UV was also playing against La Salle for the Passerelle crown.

    Back and Fourth They Go
    By GORDON MARINO

For much of boxing history, multiple meetings between contenders were common fare. Jake La Motta and Sugar Ray Robinson fought each other six times, enough for La Motta to crack, "I fought Sugar so often he almost gave me diabetes."

Niños rule CVIRAA Meet but Mandaue tames Cebu City in secondary basketball and football

    By Lemuel P. Maglinte (The Freeman) | Updated December 8, 2012 - 12:00am

DUMAGUETE CITY , Philippines — As expected, Cebu City reigned supreme in the 2012 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet, but the Niños couldn't celebrate fully as they suffered crushing blows from Mandaue in secondary basketball and football events at the end of the five-day joust yesterday.

Cebu City bagged its 20th consecutive overall championship in the annual sports conclave among elementary and high school athletes with 870.34 points followed by Cebu Province with 471.51 points and Mandaue with 326.5 points. Bohol Province and host Dumaguete settled at fourth and fifth with 238.25 and 191.25 points, respectively.

The final two golds of Cebu City came from the secondary girls 4x400m relay team of Camylle Mosota, Crizel Diongson and Elyzza Salinas and the elementary boys squad of Stephen Pekit-Pekit, Kurt Matas and Antonio Czar Octaviano.

Completing the list of gold medallists for Team Cebu City in the final day of action were Dominic Matas in the 400m run, Ralph So in the 800m run and Christian Cabillon in the 110m hurdles.

Cebu Province also finished strong in the last day of track and field events as Jacqueline Montebon notched two golds in the elementary girls 200m and 400m runs with time of 28.69sec and 1:05.16. Isadora Gabay also contributed two golds for the Province in the 800m run with a time of 2:33.99 and in the 1,500m run with a 5:13.86 clocking.

Though it placed only third overall, Mandaue stole huge part of the spotlight after it trounced Cebu City in basketball events.
Mandaue, powered by players from Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, shackled the University of the Visayas (UV)-manned Cebu City, 90-65, to claim the secondary boys basketball gold. The Cebu City cagebelles bounced back though in the girls division with a 56-33 rout of Mandaue.
In football, Mandaue, also composed of SHS-Ateneo booters, edged out the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC)-manned Cebu City, 1-0. The Niños, however, came back in the elementary battle with a 4-0 shutout of Mandaue.

Mandaue also won the gold in the secondary volleyball after bested the Southwestern University (SWU) belles, while Catmon Elementary School gave Cebu Province another gold after beating Bohol Province.

Talisay City grabbed part of the limelight after three of its pugilists won gold in boxing. They were Lariosa John Mark (30-32 kgs.), Marco Pumar (42-44 kgs.) and Kit Garces (44-46 kgs.).

Cebu City’s lone gold medallist is Junrel Jimenez in the 46-49 kgs. division, while Melmark Dignos chipped in one gold for Lapu-Lapu City in the 49-52 kgs. category. (FREEMAN)

CESAFI HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL FINALS... GAME 4

Cebu City Niños claim Cviraa overall title for 23rd straight year
    By Marian C. Baring
    Friday, December 7, 2012

DUMAGUETE CITY--For 23 years, Cebu City has been dominating the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association. And it has no plans of letting go of that title yet.

Yesterday, Cebu City capped another stunning performance, winning the overall title after getting an impressive 870.34 points. Cebu Province was a distant second at 471.51 and Mandaue was at third place with 326.5.

Cebu City managed to cling to the overall title but had actually struggled in the last day of competitions as it lost important points in the ball games, losing some of it to Mandaue City, which was powered by Ateneo de Cebu-Sacred Heart School Jesuit.

In what looked like a replay of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) junior basketball finals, the Eagles blasted the University of the Visayas (UV), 90-65, to win the title. Ateneo started off strong and built up an early 24-7 lead, which they protected until the final buzzer. Fletcher Galvez led Ateneo’s scoring with 21 points.

In the elementary division, Cebu City also won the title over Dumaguete.

In football, Cebu City and Mandaue also split the titles with Mandaue winning the secondary title and Cebu City taking the elementary division title.

Cebu beat Mandaue, 4-1, in the elementary division with Kyle Ronquillo and Christian Agot scoring two goals each. Mandaue made up for it in the secondary division as it snuck past Cebu, 1-0, behind Karlo Villamor’s early goal in the 18th minute.

In volleyball, swamped by injuries, Cebu City’s Southwestern University succumbed to Mandaue City in the secondary girls division. Mandaue was powered by players from Don Gerardo, Mandaue City Comprehensive National Highschool, St. Joseph’s Academy and Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion.

This was the first time in history that Mandaue won the title, beating Cebu City in five sets, 25-21, 26-28, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Cebu City won the secondary boys volleyball title after defeating Cebu Province, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16.

All the organizers wanted was a dry run to gauge how far along they are in the preparation for the much-awaited hosting of the Palarong Pambansa this summer.

And they were given the harshest of condition to test what they are capable of in extreme circumstances.

Dumaguete City was ravaged by Typhoon Pablo two days into the competition. And it prove to be a logistical nightmare for the organizers and officials as they had to make sure the 6,000 participants scattered all over the city were safe.

But the fact that they have gone through it, Department of Education Negros Oriental division Superintendent Sal Jimenez said they can face anything for the Palaro, which is expected to draw at least 10,000 athletes.

“With what we have encountered, I am sure that we are ready even to whatever eventualities that we will be experiencing in the coming Palaro hosting,” said Jimenez.

Regional Director Carmelita Dulangon said the preparations for the Palarong Pambansa is in order and from playing against each other, she now calls for unity as not only are they preparing for the hosting, but also to improve on their standing in the national games.

“Despite some setbacks we have experienced, our athletes are strongly determined to improve our Palaro standing. I call on everyone in Region 7 to work together,” said Dulangon, adding that they have already gotten the assurance of support not only from Negros Oriental and Dumaguete City but also the government officials from other cities and provinces in the region.

    SWEET REVENGE
UST gets back at five-time UAAP champs Ateneo to bag PCCL crownBy Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:03 am | Saturday, December 8th, 2012

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers finally got to pull one over the mighty Ateneo Blue Eagles as they beat the five-time UAAP champions, 81-76, to claim the championship in the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) in the deciding Game Three of the Finals series yesterday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Tigers served revenge on a silver platter to the Blue Eagles, who beat them for the UAAP crown months ago.

Tournament MVP Jeric Teng finished with 22 points, five rebounds and three assists to lead UST. He was backed by Kevin Ferrer, who had 21 points, nine boards and four assists.

The title did not come easy as the Blue Eagles showed their championship poise by nearly coming back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth canto.

Leading by three at the start of the fourth canto, UST padded that advantage through the efforts of Teng, who scored on back-to-back three pointers and made 10 of the team’s first 12 points to stretch the lead to 12 with three minutes left.

But much as they have done so in the past, Ateneo did not panic and got baskets from Ryan Buenafe and Kiefer Ravena, whose two freethrows pulled the Eagles to within three, 76-79, with 30.5 ticks left on the clock.

Ferrer came up big as he put back a miss by Karim Abdul to restore a five-point lead, 81-76, with just 10 seconds remaining.

The title by UST was sealed on Ateneo’s next offensive as Buenafe missed a three-point attempt and the ball was recovered by the Tigers as time ran out.
