Land dispute derails setting up of radar system in Palawan

MANILA, Philippines – The planned setting up of a land-based radar system in Palawan is being derailed due to the ongoing land ownership disputes between the military and the province’s city board members.

The land sits on one of the city’s highest peaks fronting the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). It is adjacent to Ulugan Bay now being occupied by a Philippine Marine contingent.

“Our Marine contingent are being asked to leave for reasons that their presence in the area is becoming a frightening sight to foreign tourists,” a senior Western Command (Wescom) official said.

The Wescom official said they would later discover that the group out to grab government land in area is reportedly behind the resolution asking the Marines to leave.

They added that Marines were deployed in the place along with city policemen, not only to contain warring parties out to control government land there but more particularly in line with the military’s plan to put a radar system in place.

Once a radar system becomes operational in the area, the official said Wescom will have a clearer picture of what is going on in the West Philippine Sea on a 24-hour basis.

The Wescom official also confirmed the scheduled permanent deployment of the 3rd Marine Brigade in the province.

Wescom spokesman Lt. Col. Niel Estrella has confirmed the filing of a barangay resolution asking the Marines to leave their post, but declined to discuss details.

But he added the city’s board members were now discussing the barangay resolution with Wescom officials.

DND plans to purchase Indonesian spy plane
DND plans to purchase Indonesian spy plane - The Philippine Star » News » Headlines

MANILA, Philippines – The government plans to procure a spy plane from Indonesia and a troop transport aircraft from Italy, the Department of National Defense (DND) said yesterday.

Peter Paul Galvez, DND spokesman, said the long-range maritime patrol and surveillance plane is manufactured in Indonesia under a joint venture agreement with Spain.

“On our shortlist is the Indonesian aircraft,” he said. “The long-range patrol aircraft would be devoted solely to conducting maritime surveillance.”

The DND is also scouting for a medium lift aircraft from other European countries at a lower cost, Galvez said.

Once President Aquino approves the acquisition, the spy plane would strengthen the country’s maritime domain awareness.

For a long time, the Armed Forces has been relying mainly on a small number of islander planes for maritime and territorial patrol.

The spy plane is the CASA/IPTN CN-235. The CN-235 surveillance aircraft can double as a military transport plane. Its largest user is Turkey with 61 aircraft.

The surveillance plane has a crew of two, a pilot and co-pilot, and can carry 44 passengers and a payload of 13,120 pounds with a cruising speed of 454 kilometers per hour and a range of 2,730 nautical miles

The Department of National Defence has selected Italy to supply three medium-sized military transport aircraft manufactured by Alenia Aeronautica, while Indonesia was awarded the long-range maritime patrol and surveillance plane, says Peter Paul Galvez, DND spokesman.

"It is just a matter of approval now by the President" says Galvez. Once President Aquino approves the acquisition, the planes would strengthen the country’s air force and heightened navy's maritime domain awareness.

Bitaw no offence lang mga taga Palawan, but i sense a pattern murag they are against any outsider intervention on their province. Remember they were also against multinational mining companies in their land. I sensed naa silay batasan similar to my hometown wherein dili welcome ang mga outsiders.. I hope and pray they won't be the first to be hit by chinese carpet bombers.
