The defending champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters started the second round of the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) much in the same way it did the first as they remained undefeated following their 88-84 conquest of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
UC had to scramble in the game’s waning moments in order to pull off the victory as it trailed every step of the way.
UC now holds a perfect 7-0 (win-loss) record while USC fell to 4-3.
Edward Pao donned the hero’s cape for the Webmasters has his booming three-pointer gave them an 83-82 lead. Then, after USC’s Jabby Bautista made it 84-83, Pao once again rose to the occasion as he canned a short jumper that put the Webmasters in front for good, with 26 seconds left.
UC was trailing 55-62 heading to the final stanza when its main stars came alive to fuel the comeback.
Reigning MVP Junemar Fajardo made 12 of his 18 in the fourth while Brian Heruela, who led the team with 27 markers, made nine in that stretch. Pao finished with 13, eight of which came in that turnaround. Luigi Bercede burned his former team with 12.
Giovanni Padillo led USC with 22 while Sam Hermosa added 15 and Cid Cortes chipped in 14.
In the juniors division, the league-leading Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles plucked their ninth straight win with a 93-61 beating of the Don Bosco Greywolves.
The University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars also won over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens, 68-63, for their second win in nine games.

The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers shrugged off the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 78-54, to get their second round stint off to a winning start in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament late Sunday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The victory pushed the former nine-time champions to solo second place with a 5-2 (win-loss) record while sending the struggling Jaguars to their sixth loss in seven games.
UV set the game’s tempo as early as the first period, which they finished on top, 27-14.
Phil Mercader, Jerome Silva and Edrian Lao fueled that breakway by combining for 19 of those points as the Green Lancers cruised to the easy win as they held the Jaguars further down to just nine markers in the second period to lead, 39-23, at halftime.
Four players finished in twin digits for the Green Lancers led by the 14 of Mercader and the 13 of Lao. Rene Saycon and Chris Perolino chipped in 12 each.
Abulaiz Suliman paced the losing team with 14 while Jason Olbedado and Jayson Nudalo scored 10 apiece.
Meanwhile, an explosive matchup awaits in the juniors division today as the defending champions Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons seek revenge against the UV Baby Lancers.
UV humbled CEC, 62-47, in the opening game of the season on their way to finishing the first round with a 7-1 record, good for second place.
UV is now at 8-1 after defeating the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, 70-67, last Friday.
The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras will also see action tonight when they face off against USPF in the seniors division.

UV downs CEC anewBy Jonas Panerio, University of the Visayas (UV)

The University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers reaffirmed their mastery of the defending champions Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons as they defeated the latter, 75-69, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The win gave UV a 9-1 (win-loss) record while pulling CEC down to 6-3.
The game was unlike UV’s 62-47 win over the Dragons in the first round as CEC fought until the very end and nearly pulled off a comeback from a 12-point deficit in the fourth period before folding in the clutch.
The first three periods were fought of almost even terms with the Baby Lancers just pulling ahead, 53-50, at the end of the third period after a three-pointer by Nelson Peralta late in their final possession during that stretch.
The momentum they gained from that shot carried over to the next canto as Paul Desiderio and Peralta hit some medium-range jumpers, the last one giving them a 12-point bulge, 71-59, with 4:20 left.
CEC rode the coattails of Lyle Sumayang, who single-handedly sparked a 10-0 run that brought them back to within two, 69-71.
However, bad luck halted the Dragons’ charge. On UV’s next possession, Sumayang got called for his fifth and final foul while trying to steal the ball with 45 ticks remaining.
Off that foul call, Jino Berdin calmly sank two freethrows that pushed UV’s lead to four.
The Baby Lancers were led by the 25 points of Paul Desiderio, who scored 11 of those in the opening 10 minutes of action. Peralta chipped in 14.
