It depends. Other than opening grosses, the film's ability to make money down the stretch is another important challenge to overcome. I personally never expected GI Joe to be a high grosser, even tough it's a given that it would open at number 1.
Its ability to attract moviegoers in the weeks to come is still a big question mark. Wolverine opened in America with over $85 million, yet it never reached the $200 million mark.
On the flip-side, Star Trek opened with $75 million and finished with $255 million thanks to strong word-of-mouth and its strong appeal to the mainstream viewers.
GI Joe could use the trends that helped Star Trek succeed. The question is - can it sustain and attract the paying viewers on the long run?
