SWU FALLS SHORT
Cesafi champions Cobras crawl back from 20 down but still lose to NCAA champ San BedaBy Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:34 am | Thursday, November 22nd, 2012
The reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions Southwestern University Cobras came all the way back from a 20-point deficit in the second half but still fell short against the NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions, 72-73, in the Final Four of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.
It was a fantastic effort shown by the Cobras that somehow got marred by another ill-advised outburst by fiery head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, as he allegedly slapped his point guard Joseph Nalos again after the latter held on to the ball for too long in the dying seconds and failing to get a potential game-winner off before the buzzer sounded.
“Good but not good enough,” said Alcoseba after the game about his wards’ efforts yesterday.
Facing 45-65 deficit midway through the third and a 17-point hole at the start of the fourth canto, the Cobras came roaring back behind the stellar play of Cameroonian, Ben Mbala, who scored 16 of his 27 points in the fourth canto. They also held the Red Lions to just six points in the payoff period and were within one and with possession after Baser Amer missed a three pointer.
With just 10 seconds left, San Beda forced Mbala away from the paint while Nalos contemplated his next move. The former Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkitten, though, took too much time and got the ball to Mbala’s hands with just three seconds remaining and SWU was not able to get a shot off as time expired.
Alcoseba was livid after the buzzer sounded and approached Nalos and was seen by cameras hitting Nalos in the face. This was the second time that an incident like this has happened after Alcoseba got into it with Nalos during their Aug. 26 match against rivals University of the Visayas. That led to Nalos leaving the squad before later on deciding to come back.
Asked about the incident, Alcoseba commented that he was just upset with Nalos for not knowing how much time was remaining. “I just tapped his face for not knowing the game clock,” said Alcoseba in a text message to this writer.
UST SHOCKS ATENEO
In the second game, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers exacted revenge upon their UAAP tormentors, the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 76-66, behind Jeric Teng’s 22 points.
SWU faces Ateneo tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the continuation of the single round-robin semifinals of this tournament. San Beda takes on UST at 4 p.m.

2 p.m. – SWU vs. Ateneo
4 p.m. – San Beda vs. UST
The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champions Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras try to regroup after their heartbreaking loss to San Beda last Wednesday as they take on the five-peat UAAP champs Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in the semifinals of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League today over at the Arena in San Juan City.
The Cobras put up one heck of a fight against the winningest team in NCAA history, the Red Lions, but fell short, 72-73, at the start of the single round-robin semis last Wednesday.
It was a gallant comeback by SWU, which trailed by as much as 20 and were still down by 17 at the start of the fourth canto.
They even had a chance to swing down the upset axe upon the mighty Red Lions but a mental lapse by point guard Joseph Nalos, who did not take notice of the time remaining and failed to get a shot off as time expired, ensured the gutwrenching loss.
The incident after the final buzzer raised even more eyebrows among viewers of the game both at the venue and on national TV alike as SWU head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba was caught slapping Nalos on the head for the gaffe. Alcoseba, played down the incident in a conversation yesterday morning and reported that the squad was in good spirits in spite of the defeat.
CONTRASTING STATEMENTS
“The team’s morale is high and everybody is excited to put up another good fight against the top team in the country. Hopefully, this time we can come away with a win,” said the multi-titled mentor.
However, Nalos painted another picture in an interview with Spin.ph. Cebu Daily News tried to get at the youngster but calls made went unanswered. In that interview, Nalos admitted that he is already used to his coach’s antics but added that he hopes that it won’t happen again. This was Nalos’ second brush with his coach. A similar incident also happened in their game against the University of the Visayas last Aug. 26.
“Last na ito. Hindi pa ako sure kung maglalaro sa Friday, pero last na ito,” stated Nalos.
The second game of today’s double-header will feature the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, which beat Ateneo the other day, 76-66, taking on the San Beda Red Lions.
SWU 5, Ateneo fight for survival in PCCL
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel (The Freeman) | Updated November 23, 2012 - 12:00am
CEBU, Philippines - Cebu collegiate basketball king Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras and UAAP five-peat champion Ateneo Blue Eagles both fight for dear life as they go up against each other in the resumption of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Final Four today at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Cobras and the Eagles faltered in their respective opening assigments last Tuesday, making their 2 pm showdown a sudden-death affair.
Displaying their trademark never-say-die spirit, the Cobras spectacularly wiped out a 20-point deficit late in the third quarter but still fell short in the end, bowing to NCAA grandslam champion San Beda Red Lions via a 73-72 cliffhanger, while the Eagles were sent crashing back to earth by the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, 66-76.
After a botched play by the Lions with only 12 seconds left to play, the Cobras had a chance to complete what could have been a great escape but pointguard Joseph Nalos unwittingly dribbled the ball away to the huge disappoinment of coach Raul "Yayoy" D. Alcoseba.
But Alcoseba took their setback on a positive note.
"We were down by 20 points and yet we nearly beat san Beda. It only shows that we are capable of beating Manila teams," said Alcoseba, who drew flak from some quarters for the adverse manner he confronted Nalos after their heart-breaking defeat to San Beda.
"I told my boys that that game is already behind us. We should now focus on the tougher challenge ahead against Ateneo. It's a do-or-die game for us and we have no other recourse than to give our best and win," said Alcoseba.
Explosive 6-foot-7 center Benoit Mbala, who charted 27 points in a losing effort against the Lions, will again be at the forefront of SWU's offensive alongside fellow Cameroonian banger Justin Aboude.
Aside from Nalos and Benito Ortuyo at the backcourt, the Cobras could also draw support from Monbert Arong, Bonifacio Guilllena, Bernie Bregondo, and Daryl Goloron.
The Eagles, on the other hand, will squeeze the most from Nico Salva, Kiefer Ravena and Cebuano stars Greg Slaughter and Chris Sumalinog as they also hope to stay alive in the elite league that will determine the best collegiate ballclub in the land.
Right after the SWU-Ateneo duel, the Lions will tackle the Tigers at 4 pm, with the winner earning an automatic berth into the best-of-three finals that will begin on November 27. (FREEMAN)
Fiery veteran coach Alcoseba humiliates Southwestern University top point guard
By Mei-Lin Lozada
November 22, 2012, 04:20 pm
IT came as a shock to those watching at the San Juan Arena and thousand others on national television.
Southwestern University coach Yayoy Alcoseba was caught slapping Cobras point guard Joseph Nalos in the head after failing to make a last-second attempt at a possible game-winning basket in the team’s 72-73 loss to San Beda College in the Final Four of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Wednesday.
The incident happened after Nalos was caught still holding the ball at the buzzer as big man Benoit M-bala passed off to him at the last second for the game-winning shot.
Nalos admitted he wasn’t aware about the game clock winding down.
“Hindi ko alam, hindi ko nakita,” he said.
It was actually a humiliating experience the poor player had to undergo all over again.
The same incident, according to him, happened during a Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) game early this year between the Cobras and the University of the Visayas Green Lancers.
“The same din `yung nangyari dati sa laban namin sa UV,” recalled Nalos to Spin.ph. “Nasaktan talaga ako sa nangyari.”
Nalos admitted having been greatly affected by the situation that he decided to quit the team, only to make a comeback stint later on as he tries to help the Cobras in their PCCL campaign.
But the third-year Financial Management student appeared already used to the antics of Alcoseba, the veteran coach based in the Queen City of the South who’s widely-known for his temperamental manner.
“Ganun talaga `yun,” he said of his coach.
Nalos however, hopes the incident will never happen again as he contemplates on whether to suit up for the Cobras again.
“Last na ito,” he said. “Hindi pa ako sure kung maglalaro sa Friday, pero last na ito.”
A WIN IS STILL A WIN
Eliminated SWU Cobras pull off close victory over early finalists UST TigersBy Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 8:47 am | Monday, November 26th, 2012
Regardless of whether or not the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers played their best or not, a win is a win and the Southwestern University Cobras made sure of that as they upset the early finalists, 93-91, in overtime in the final day of the semifinal round of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Carrying the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions to the hard-fought win was Cameroonian superstar Ben Mbala, who scored 41 points and had 16 rebounds in an incredible performance that had UAAP and NCAA scouts salivating to recruit him.
But UST, alsready assured of a finals berth, opted to play without some of its stars including UAAP MVP runner-up Karim Abdul and sophomore sensation Kevin Ferrer.
Nevertheless, SWU head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba was proud of this accomplishment. “You have to give it to the players. They really wanted to leave with a win,” the controversial mentor said as SWU finished the semis with a 1-2 (win-loss) record.
Asked about the prospect of Mbala being wooed to the NCAA or UAAP by scouts, Alcoseba said, “not on my watch.”
The overtime was forced by the Tigers after Jeric Teng scored on a putback that tied the game at 77-all with just seconds remaining in regulation.
The game was just as thrilling during overtime but the Cobras took a three-point lead, 92-89, after a trey by Monbert Arong.
But UST crawled within one after freethrows by Melo Afuang. Mbala split his free-throws to make it a two-point game. UST had several chances to win but missed on their three-point attempts as time expired.
UST will be taking on UAAP champions Ateneo after the Blue Eagles routed the San Beda Red Lions, 66-49, in the second game. The series will be a rematch of this year’s UAAP finals series, which Ateneo won for its fifth straight crown.
