It's easy to be tough on crime and suspected criminals, but will you stick to your principles the day you are falsely accused of a crime? OK ra gihapon nimo kung piti-on dayun ka? Small sacrifice for the cause of justice di ba?

You put too much trust in the police or the death squads. Remember that law enforcers in this country are not very smart, so I have no doubt that a lot of innocent people have already been killed in Davao.

They can be removed if found criminally liable and put in prison. Too bad our President doesn't have the willpower to throw the book at allies who misbehave. This is one of the reasons our country is a joke, we don't respect the rule of law, it's the rule of popularity. If you're popular, you can get away with anything.

That is a bastardization of the true meaning of democracy. Democracy doesn't mean that if most people vote for you, you can do whatever the **k you want....

As things stand now, Davao has become an example of why Federalism won't work in this country, which is too bad because it would have been good for Cebu. It doesn't matter if voters in Davao are fanatics of the Dutertes, just as it doesn't matter that voters in Surigao are fanatic of Ecleo. There is one law that applies to the entire Philippines and it should be respected.

I'm glad I live in Cebu, we have political families but at least we've had different governors, mayors, etc. Its not a one-family dictatorship here.

It is something that we the people have accepted as 'common knowledge,' 'wa na tay mabuhat,' 'ig-ana na jud na,' 'kinsa man sad ang wa ngbuhat ug ig-ana,' 'sabton nlang nato kay mutabang man sad sa mga taw,' and many more. It is a challenge to everyone of us because whatever it is that has been 'believed' and has become deep-seated in our minds affects our very actions. What is so sad is that this twisted reasoning has become so pervasive that it has gone up to the once effective guardians of our morality. It is very difficult to change because it has already spread like cancer cells to our brains.
How can we as a nation get out of this quagmire is something that we have to tackle right away using our ethical minds!!!

We can partly blame this on the Supreme Court too, which created the Aguinaldo doctrine. That's the doctrine that says that civil liability of public officials who are elected to public office are forgiven if the voters re-elect them into office. This sick mentality of letting a mandate absolve people in power of liability has only gotten worse from there...

Does anyone here have the right to actually question his action? He is a public official, fine. he should have not done that for decency sake. But he was within the bounds of rights also.

Is there any evidence that could connect the duterte with the vigilante killings in the Davao? Are the family of those who were killed filed any case against?

All we have here are hearsay... yeah duterte said something about allowing vigilantes but its actually something one can use in court as form admittance to a crime....

I hope what Davao have right now will not stop with the Duterte, its good that they are running the city well but what if there is one who will abuse that power?

Fear is nice tool to command respect and also to preserve order as long as their constituents feels that they are also being served and not abused. We should then not equate always fear with oppression....

^ If you believe that, then you should live in a country that really uses fear to full effect. Like North Korea, or even China to a lesser extent. You don't need fear to command respect or preserve order, you need the rule of law. As I said before, bringing justice is important but it must be with due process. It is so easy for you and other people here to praise the shortcuts the Duteretes are making (not sure you're really for this but it seems like it from your post) but the moment you get accused of a crime you didn't commit and in fear for your life I'm sure you'll change tunes.

It's fear of the law that we should instill in people, not fear of personalities. If we let the Dutertes show their finger to the law, then the people won't respect the law, the courts or anybody. Nobody is saying the Dutertes are 100% responsible for the killings but they are most likely behind them and that is why we need a President who has the willpower to really throw the full power of the national government behind a thorough investigation, just like he is doing with the Ampatuans. In truth, though people think the Ampatuans and Duterte's are different, in many respects they are the same and are suspected of having blood on their hands.

Anyone who supports vigilante killings needs to re-examine their principles. If they really think every suspect who was killed is guilty, then they need to have their heads checked... throwing a finger at the media is just a symptom of an underlying disease that is worse the further you dig in. It is the tip of the iceberg of the arrogance of these people who have been in power for way too long and are bastardizing democracy by making it seem as though getting elected is permission to do with the law as you please.

The problem with thinking this way is that if you use fear to control crime, you end up with the situation that it must be maintained permanently. If you remove fear, then crime will come back with a vengeance, and so you get the situation in Davao where the people are made to believe that they need the Duterte's to stay in power forever, so that the climate of fear can also be maintained forever. Is that good for democracy? You tell me.

Instead of addressing the true causes of crime and coming up with a real solution, they use vigilante killings as a shortcut to reducing the crime level artificially without having to do the hard work of improving policing, providing livelihood and economic development and creating jobs. When the vigilante killings stop, crime will come back in full force. So vigilante killings need to continue, and that kind of psychological manipulation is something the Duterte's have been good at.

But in reality this method shows no real leadership or intelligence. Anybody can rule with an iron fist, it doesn't take any brains. Solving real problems, like lack of decent jobs or poor policing requires real intelligence. Too bad the people in Davao don't have that alternative, they've been made to think it's either Dutertes or a crime wave.
