Webmasters ward off Warriors

DEFENDING collegiate champions University of Cebu Webmasters banked on a strong fourth quarter to escape a near upset loss to the University of San Carlos Warriors, 88-84, in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. last night at the Cebu Coliseum.


The Warriors led most of the way and entered the fourth period on top, 66-55. The Webmasters turned to three of its top players Brian Heruela, Junemar Fajardo and Edward Pao, to help the squad ward off the pesky Warriors.

USC was still leading, 80-78, after a basket from Fajardo with less than two minutes left on the clock. Heruela, who was UC’s go-to-guy with 27 points, made a crucial steal that was converted to two free throws to tie the game at 80 in the 1:24 mark.


Sam Hermosa gave the lead back to USC, 82-80, after a penetration layup but Pao immediately answered with a three-pointer on the other end for an 83-82 advantage for UC.


After USC took the lead back with a basket by Andre Bautista, Pao scored a layup with 26.4 ticks left for an 85-84 lead for UC.


Michael Cantonao tried to seal the game with a three-point shot but he missed and the ball was turned over after Padillo tipped the ball out of bounds in a rebound attempt with 15.1 seconds left.


Luigi Bercede shot one of two from the charity stripe with 9.3 seconds left for an 86-84 advantage for UC. USC had enough time to win the game with a three-pointer or send it to overtime but Cid Cortes fumbled Hermosa’s pass on the other end that went to the hands of Heruela, who converted two free throws after being fouled.
