Default SHS-J Ateneo de Cebu is slowly moving up

Eagles nab third win

Saturday, August 21, 2010
By Rommel C. Manlosa

THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Eagles picked their third straight win, while rival Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons marched to their fifth victory in the high school division of the 2010 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Eagles clamped the offensive prowess of Rommel Diapera for a 78-72 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, while the Dragons avenged an 82-point loss to the defending champions Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT) Wildkittens last year with a clinical 87-52 bashing in the opening match.

SHS-AdC focus its defense on the high-scoring Diapera, who was limited to just nine points, nine days after scoring 32 against the CEC Dragons.

The game was closely fought all the way but the Eagles’ defense held on for their third win in five games. USPF is also 3-2.

Julius Salvador Cadavis topscored for SHS-AdC with 18 ponts and Bradley Brian Bacaltos added 15. Joshua Corcilles scored a game-high 20 and Jayson Cando contributed 11 for USPF.

In the first game, the Dragons dropped a tearing 27-14 blitz in the second quarter to build a 46-28 lead at the bend to cruise to their fifth win in six games.

The Dragons’ only loss was against the University of the Visayas (UV).

Nike Montalvo again displayed his scoring prowess and delivered 21 points—including nine in the second quarter—as CEC took over the solo leadership over the idle UV, which has a 3-1 record.
Aside from Montalvo, James Neil Sumayang also shared the offensive load with 14 points.

Default Money spent wisely delivers results

Ang CEC Dragons lisod nang pildehon
(Banat) Updated August 23, 2010 12:00 AM

Mao kana'y gitawag "money can move mountains".

USC could clinch the 3rd spot going into the QF with a win over DBTC for a 5-2 record. I'm thinking a 3rd straight PCCL entry for the Warriors depende sa ila bracket sa zonals. peligro pa na ang UC sa semis. They are too dependent on Fajardo and USC has shown they know how to contain him in the past

Lancers notch fifth straight victory
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated August 24, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - Nine-time champion University of the Visayas Green Lancers overcame an unproductive and chaotic fourth quarter to pull off an 82-79 victory over the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in a physical and highly-emotional encounter that resulted into the ejection of UV pointguard Eman Calo the other night in the 10th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season at the Cebu Coliseum.

Games Today August 24 (Cebu Coliseum)
4:30 pm DBTC vs. CIT (jrs.)
6 pm UC vs. USP-F (srs.)

Earlier, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) finally barged into the win column but the Jaguars had to toil hard until the closing minutes of the contest before taming the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves, 66-59.

Calo, whose second quarter explosion helped the Lancers mount a 19-point lead, 58-39, was assessed with two unsportsmanlike fouls against UC’s Robinson Mohammad that led to his ejection at the final 4:39 mark of the game.

First, Calo planted an elbow to Mohammad’s adam’s apple with 1:20 left in the third period. He went up against the same rival when he dove for the ball and then wiggled his body on top of Mohammad, which the referees deemed as an unsportsmanlike gesture, thus, he was thrown out of the game.
Just when everybody thought it’s going to be blowout for the Lancers, the Webmasters staged a furious fightback in the final period to erase the huge deficit and even grab the upperhand, 72-71, on a 3-pointer by Edward Pao.

The Webmasters still enjoyed a 76-73 edge on a basket by Junemar Fajardo with 1:25 left to play, but the Lancers made the powerful endgame kick by scoring eight straight points courtesy of Phil Mercader and Ralf Olivares that saved their day.

The Lancers, who were outscored by the Webmasters in the final period, 31-22, are now alone at the top spot with an unblemished 5-0 record.

Olivares and Harold Cincoflores connived for 39 points for the Lancers, who will be out of commission in their next game against the Jaguars on Thursday, added 15 points.

Fajardo, Pao and Kelvin Juliane conspired for 51 points for the Webmasters.

Earlier, Jun Lapiz fired 15 points as the Jaguars survived the 24-point output of Greywolves’ Jefford Aldave to snap out of their four-game losing spell.

In the secondary matches, the Baby Jaguars rode on the 20-point explosion of Renzo Senining to beat the Junior Greywolves, 77-68, while the UC Junior Webmasters mauled the USC Baby Warriors, 78-60.
