Inside Report: Training Camp, Day 3 -- running the point

MAVERICKS: Inside Report: Training Camp, Day 3 -- running the point

With Roddy Beaubois temporarily sidelined, there appears to be an opportunity for Dee Brown to make the Mavericks' roster and supply depth at point guard, writes Earl K. Sneed. Along with future Hall of Famer Jason Kidd and four-year veteran J.J. Barea, the Mavs could be deep at the point.
After Wednesday's practice created a buzz about the Mavericks' depth at the center position, the talk shifted to the point guards a day later.
With future Hall of Famer Jason Kidd manning the controls for the team's first unit, the focus is on the health situation of budding star Roddy Beaubois, placing a premium on the play of undersized guards J.J. Barea and Dee Brown. Beaubois is progressing as scheduled with daily rehab sessions to recover from an off-season foot injury, making Barea and Brown the main relievers for the veteran Kidd when the 37-year-old heads to the sidelines.
"We look at all the point guards," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "There's so many good players available that a lot of times it just comes down to numbers...We like our manpower situation and it's gonna get better when Roddy gets back."
"Look, I mean, we all know that we don't want Jason (Kidd) playing 48 minutes in the preseason," president of basketball operations and general manager Donnie Nelson added.
Barea, a four-year pro, has shown that he can run the team from the lead guard spot. He's also an occasional plug-in at the 2, showing an ability to weave in and out of the lane with dribble penetration.
"(Barea) has established consistency at that position," Carlisle said. "He's been a difference-maker for us, as a bench player and as a starter.
"He's not a guy that people should write off by any stretch. He's proven who he is, what he can do and we need him."
But Brown is the unknown -- attempting to impress the Mavericks' brass enough to earn a roster spot. The former All-American at Illinois has been in and out of the league, also spending time playing professionally overseas since being drafted in the second round in 2006 by the Utah Jazz.
"Roddy was working through his injury situation and J.J. had a long summer. So we wanted to bring in someone that had NBA experience, that was a leader, a push-it-up point guard that can create opportunities for our other players. So [Brown] was our best guy," Nelson said.
"He is the only guy we brought in at that position. Roddy's gonna be out for awhile, so we knew we needed somebody to take reps," Carlisle said. "And there's an opportunity there. Some of it's gonna hinge on Roddy's timetable and all those kinds of things...He's a proven backup in this league."
And with the Dallas front office giving Brown high praise -- making him the only point guard that's not on a guaranteed contract to receive an invitation to camp -- he appears to have an opportunity to contend for the 14th roster spot.
"We've potentially got minutes. And so, when you're in the preseason and you're still trying to win games and set the table for the regular season, you want a guy that has experience. And so, as far as a roster spot, you know, we've got three point guards, so it will be tight there. But he's certainly a worthy training camp candidate. And you never know," Nelson said.
"He's here because there's an opportunity to play and possibly make our team or show what he can do for other teams who are watching," Carlisle explained. "So, I know he has opportunities in Europe, if he wants them. But he's just focused on coming back and being in the NBA. So I think this is a good shot for him."
Carlisle also sees a little of himself in Brown's situation, back when the now coach was a player trying to stick on with a championship-contending team.
"When I went to training camp in 1984, I didn't think there was gonna be any opportunity to make the Boston Celtics and then some strange things happened. We had a couple guys hold out, we had a couple of injuries at certain times, I got a chance to play and then 'boom,' they decided to make a huge trade and that changed everything. So strange things happen," Carlisle said.
Brown will have a chance to continue to impress when the team splits up for a Blue-White intrasquad scrimmage in its Thursday evening practice.
