Close Shave: Mavs Coach Carlisle Already Making (Hair) Cuts

    Mike Fisher -- DB.com

It’s Monday Media Day … not even training camp yet. But Mavs coach Rick Carlisle has already made cuts. Haircuts. “My hair looked bad the other way and it looks bad this way,’’ Carlisle told me as he unveiled a shaved-head look at the AAC. “So what’s the difference?’’
Having heard that Carlisle actually has the electric shaver in his office, I asked him if it was some button-pushing motivational ploy for the team. You know, “One For All, And All Get A Buzzcut.’’
“Aw, I haven’t put that much energy or thought into it,’’ replied Mr. Clean.

Still, a few Mavs staffers bought in. And Caron Butler tells me his head is shaved because Rick “inspired’’ him.
“When coach came up to Chicago to visit me, he had the close-cropped look,’’ Butler said. “So I’m right there with him.’’
Butler has also shaved off some weight – “nine or 10 pounds,’’ he tells me – and I’ll have more on that infinitely more important issue coming up.
But I’m getting the haircut stuff out of the way early.
A couple of Mavs come by the close-cropped look naturally; Brian Cardinal hasn’t need a razor for years. And Dirk Nowitzki is very much in the opposite direction as his locks are a-flowin’.
“No, Dirk couldn’t do it,’’ Butler says. “I think he’s devoted to looking like a surfer dude.’’
And what does Rick Carlisle look like? Well, he used to resemble Jim Carrey, of course. And now that he’s buzzed?
He looks like a Jim Carrey who just got released from prison.

Inside Report: Training Camp, Day 1 -- Morning Practice Report

    By Earl K. Sneed, Mavs.com

Mavs.com's inside reporter Earl K. Sneed writes that the Mavericks' first practice of the season was totally dedicated to defense.

If the Mavericks' have their way, the point of emphasis in their first practice will become the squad's identity this season: Defense.

Tuesday's morning practice, the first of training camp with a night practice also scheduled, was completely dedicated to the defensive end of the floor. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle says that a strong defensive mentality will be the team's calling card this season.

"This was all defense this morning," Carlisle said. "And we got a good start on our basics. Tonight will be more offensive stuff, spacing and those kinds of things. But it was a positive start and it went well."

With a veteran team, Carlisle and the coaching staff believe that the offense will eventually take care of itself. The veteran leadership agrees, according to point guard Jason Kidd.

Kidd, who is personally taking the responsibility of placing some of the team's new faces in the right positions on the court, says that the initial practice of the season was the perfect way to tip off camp.

"Morning practice went well, I think," Kidd said. "I think everybody was excited to get some sweat in and get some work done. We're working on our defensive stuff and we weren't worried about making shots. Just everybody talking and just getting some running in and getting some sweating in. And just getting back into the swing of things.

"I think that's going to be the whole year, defensively. If you look at the teams that have won championships, they've always been in the Top 5 defensively. So for us, that's what we have to do. We have to build on what we did last year, get the new guys into the principle and then go from there. But I thought everybody looked good today."

Meanwhile, both Kidd and Carlisle are encouraged by the fact that everyone came into camp in shape and ready for what they believe is a journey to an NBA title.

Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea and Ian Mahinmi all played internationally this offseason in the FIBA World Championship. And a number of other players trained together in Dallas or own their own in their respective off-season hometowns. According to Kidd, everyone returned in great shape, especially the team's No. 1 scorer.

"Everybody looked good today. Dirk (Nowitzki) looks like a two-guard. He wants to get down to 220 (pounds). He doesn't want to have the 'power forward' label any more. No, everybody looks good," Kidd said.

The team returns to the practice court Tuesday evening, as two-a-days continue leading up to the preseason opener at home against the Washington Wizards on Oct. 5.
