Close Shave: Mavs Coach Carlisle Already Making (Hair) Cuts
Mike Fisher -- DB.com
It’s Monday Media Day … not even training camp yet. But Mavs coach Rick Carlisle has already made cuts. Haircuts. “My hair looked bad the other way and it looks bad this way,’’ Carlisle told me as he unveiled a shaved-head look at the AAC. “So what’s the difference?’’
Having heard that Carlisle actually has the electric shaver in his office, I asked him if it was some button-pushing motivational ploy for the team. You know, “One For All, And All Get A Buzzcut.’’
“Aw, I haven’t put that much energy or thought into it,’’ replied Mr. Clean.
Still, a few Mavs staffers bought in. And Caron Butler tells me his head is shaved because Rick “inspired’’ him.
“When coach came up to Chicago to visit me, he had the close-cropped look,’’ Butler said. “So I’m right there with him.’’
Butler has also shaved off some weight – “nine or 10 pounds,’’ he tells me – and I’ll have more on that infinitely more important issue coming up.
But I’m getting the haircut stuff out of the way early.
A couple of Mavs come by the close-cropped look naturally; Brian Cardinal hasn’t need a razor for years. And Dirk Nowitzki is very much in the opposite direction as his locks are a-flowin’.
“No, Dirk couldn’t do it,’’ Butler says. “I think he’s devoted to looking like a surfer dude.’’
And what does Rick Carlisle look like? Well, he used to resemble Jim Carrey, of course. And now that he’s buzzed?
He looks like a Jim Carrey who just got released from prison.
