MANILA, Philippines – The National Capital Region Police Office has relieved a Manila police officer for joining without proper authorization the SWAT assault team during last Monday’s hostage drama at the Quirino Grandstand.
NCRPO Director Leocadio Santiago Jr. announced the relief of Superintendent Nelson Yabut, who was seen in the video recordings as the officer without a flak jacket and his bull cap worn in reverse.
Every one involved in the incident is being investigated, Santiago told reporters in a brief interview at Camp Bagong Diwa Friday afternoon.
"He was relieved... He was not part of the organization," Santiago said, referring to the crisis committee set up by the authorities.
Yabut was a battalion commander of the Manila Police District mobile force , one of the units dispatched to the hostage incident on Monday, where eight Hong Kong tourists were killed by the hostage-taker, dismissed Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza, who was himself killed by a sniper.
