Rockets reach deal with top pick Patrick Patterson
HOUSTON (AP)—The Houston Rockets have reached an agreement with first-round draft pick Patrick Patterson.
Patterson’s agent, Odell McCants, said the deal is a standard rookie contract, with the first two years guaranteed and two one-year options. McCants said Patterson planned to sign the contract after the Rockets’ summer league game in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.
The Rockets chose the 6-foot-9, 236-pound forward from Kentucky with the 14th pick overall in the draft. Patterson scored 18 points in the Rockets’ summer-league opener in Las Vegas on Friday.
The agreement was first reported by KRIV-TV.

Rockets agree to terms with F Scola
HOUSTON (AP)—A person with knowledge of the deal says the Houston Rockets have agreed to terms with restricted free agent Luis Scola(notes) of Argentina.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not official and the team had not announced it.
Scola’s agent, George Bass, did not immediately return a phone message. The Houston Chronicle and KRIV-TV reported that Scola agreed to a five-year deal worth $47 million.
Re-signing Scola was Houston’s top priority after the team matched Cleveland’s offer sheet to retain point guard Kyle Lowry(notes) on Wednesday. Scola started all 82 games for the Rockets last season and averaged 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said after last season that owner Leslie Alexander would match any offers to keep Lowry and Scola.
The Rockets have been quiet on the free-agent front since Morey met with Chris Bosh(notes) moments after free agency began on July 1. Bosh joined LeBron James(notes) and Dwyane Wade(notes) in Miami, while Morey turned his focus to new deals for Lowry and Scola.
The Rockets are expecting All-Star center Yao Ming(notes) to return healthy from foot surgery this season. Morey has said that Houston’s biggest free-agent move came in February, when the team dealt Tracy McGrady’s(notes) massive contract to New York and signed shooting guard Kevin Martin(notes). Houston also picked up promising forward Jordan Hill(notes) in the deal.
Scola has been one of Houston’s most consistent players since the Rockets acquired his draft rights from San Antonio before the 2007-08 season. He’s started every game over the past two years and averaged 13.1 points and 7.9 rebounds in three seasons with Houston.
Brad Miller is now a Rocket
HOUSTON (AP)—Free agent center Brad Miller has agreed to a three-year, $15 million contract with the Houston Rockets.
The 7-foot Miller averaged 8.8 points and 4.9 rebounds for Chicago last season. Miller played in Sacramento from 2003-09, including three seasons playing for current Houston coach Rick Adelman.
Agent Mark Bartelstein said in a phone interview on Saturday that reuniting with Adelman was a major factor in Miller’s decision.
“Coach Adelman was a huge part of it,” Bartelstein said. “He had a great time playing for him, and he thinks he’s a great, great coach.”
The 34-year-old Miller will back up All-Star center Yao Ming(notes), who’s expected to return healthy next season after sitting out a year to recover from foot surgery.
Miller will enter his 13th NBA season. His best year came in 2003-04, his first with the Kings under Adelman, when he averaged 14.1 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. He averaged a career-high 15.6 points in 2004-05.
