    ‘Dinagyang’ with a bang

MANILA, Philippines—Being an Ilongga at heart, I drop everything to attend the Dinagyang festivities every January in the “City of Love.” But I enjoyed this year’s celebration with the Kapamilya network the most.
The festival, which commemorates the Christianization of the natives and is in honor of the Sto. Niņo, was voted the Best Tourism Event for 2006, 2007 and 2008 by the Association of Tourism Officers in the Philippines.
ABS-CBN Iloilo made the fiesta all the more memorable with its Kapamilya Karavan “Hinugyaw” at the Freedom Grandstand which was jam-packed with more than 15,000 fans. Ilonggos gamely joined contests to get a chance to be serenaded by John Lloyd Cruz and Cristine Reyes.
    Lucky Ilonggas
Cristine sent the crowd to a frenzy when she did a duet with Ilonggo host Sedfrey Cabaluna. Two lucky Ilonggas were on cloud nine as Loydie sung “Ngiti” and “Ale” while caressing them as if they were his “ka-love team.”
The fun night was capped by Kamikazee’s highly charged numbers. Jericho Rosales, Sam Concepcion and Vhong Navarro were mobbed at their SM City Iloilo show. The Kapamilya station covered the various festivities from live points and stationed a stage truck at Plazoletagay for free public viewing.
    Better broadcast quality
“Our recent tie-up with Bayan and Skycable enables us to broadcast even better audio and video quality of our Dinagyang coverage and of local shows,” said ABS-CBN Iloilo’s (Channel 10) station manager Charie Ginete-Ilon. These programs include “TV Patrol Iloilo,” “Una Sa Balita,” “Sikat Ka Iloilo,” and “Mag TV Na Amiga.”
Everyone had a blast drowning in the beats of my fave DJ Jay Villarruz at Iloilo’s premier party place Flow Superclub.
    ‘Very Special’ sequel
I cornered Loydie about his next movie with Sarah Geronimo. Will they have a kissing scene this time? “Since it’s a sequel of ‘A Very Special Love,’ dapat next level na din ang portrayal,” he said. “It’s a must to have even one kissing scene para believable na we’re lovers.” Is Sarah ready to kiss her sweet image goodbye?
Loydie is also excited about his movie with Vilma Santos where he will portray the gay lover of Luis Manzano. “It’s not a screaming faggot type of role. Luis and I will be like typical gay men in New York where most of the film will be shot.” Leave the flamboyance to Bebe Gandanghari.
    Not in touch
I asked Cristine if she would greet her ex Dennis Trillo on Valentine’s Day. “We don’t keep in touch anymore,” she said. “He doesn’t know my new number. Peace naman kami. Ayoko lang muna na may communication pa kami. Napaso na ako.” I kidded her: “What you resist will persist!”
As the tribus paraded with their painted faces, the Ilonggo “Kapamilyas” painted the town red with their very own brand of fun. Living up to the meaning of “Dinagyang” (dancing/merry-making), the Kapamilya stars really made hearts dance for joy.

    GMA 7: Granada not a co-author

MANILA, Philippines—Broadcast network GMA 7 said it has “called the attention” of the composer of a Kapuso ad jingle, which singer-songwriter Gary Granada claims to have used the basic structure of his own work.
“We are still waiting for the response,” GMA 7 senior vice president for legal affairs Dick B. Perez told Inquirer on Friday.
In a 14-minute audio file sent via e-mail to friends, colleagues and the media, Granada said GMA Kapuso Foundation commissioned his services for the jingle’s music. He said the study tape he submitted was disapproved, but that the final product, aired in December, resembled his work.
In a statement sent to the Inquirer on Saturday, Perez said the foundation “had nothing to do with the composition of the music.” Perez also said the lyrics given to Granada to work on came from GMA 7’s Marketing department.
Granada said he had to change one word to suit the music. Under copyright laws, Perez countered, this “does not make [it]... his version.” Perez added that Granada can’t claim joint authorship, either. “[Joint authorship means] 1) there was an intent between two parties to be joint authors at the time the work was created, and 2) the contributions to the work of the party claiming to be a joint author must be independently copyrightable.”
Granada’s case lacked these requisites, Perez insisted. He said Granada was engaged to write the music to lyrics “completed by GMA Marketing. Neither GMA Marketing nor Granada intended to be joint authors of [said] lyrics.”

    To the next level

MANILA, Philippines—Angelica Panganiban is raring to take her relationship with Derek Ramsay to another level.
They’re not tying the knot; they’re co-starring in a new movie—the yet-untitled directorial comeback of Laurice Guillen for Star Cinema.
“We’ve worked together a few times. I know him so well, but I’d like to discover the other side of him,” she told Inquirer Entertainment in a one-on-one interview at her launch as a Swatch Lady with Anne Curtis.
They’ve been a couple for “almost three years,” she said. That’s longer than most celebrity marriages. What’s their secret?
“He’s mature and I’m kinda like a child at times. That gives spice to our relationship,” she noted.
She has also shed baby fat since pairing up with hunky Derek, who’s very athletic and active.
“We play ultimate Frisbee,” she said. “And I try to go to the gym weekly.”
Angelica needs to stay fit, not only to keep up with Derek, but because she will shuttle between the movie and a new ABS-CBN series starting this month.
Laurice megged her 2004 launching film “Santa Santita.” Said Angelica, “I’m happy to work with Direk again. This one’s a world away from ‘Santa.’”
She plays the role of an unfaithful wife torn between two men, to be played by Derek and Gabby Concepcion.
The award-winning former child star won her first award as an adult—a Luna (Film Academy) Best Supporting Actress for “A Love Story.”
Gabby was her co-star in the soap “Iisa Pa Lamang” and “one of the nicest guys I’ve met in show biz,” she said. “He’s fun, and doesn’t give you headaches

    SANGA-SANGANDILA Ni Veronica R. Samio Updated February 02, 2009 12:00 AM

Si Gerald, he is more than a handsome face now.
It will be worth your while. Parang sine na, libre pa!
