Inside Report: Barea turning heads at the Worlds

Inside Report: Barea turning heads at the Worlds

Though he stands modestly at an even 6-feet tall -- perhaps with two pairs of socks and high-top sneakers -- Dallas Mavericks guard J.J. Barea is sending a much bigger message to the rest of the basketball world this offseason.

While basketball fans stateside have been more concerned with Team USA's routs of Croatia and Slovenia in its first two games of the FIBA World Championship being held in Istanbul, Turkey, Barea has served notice to the other 23 countries competing in the international tournament, as well as the NBA, that he is much more than what he appears.

Despite two losses for his Puerto Rican team to open group play, Barea has shined. Having the opportunity to represent his native land while working on his game is the opportunity of a lifetime for Barea. In the process, he has given Mavericks fans something to look forward to once he returns to Dallas for the team's training camp which starts on Sept. 28.

"I love to play for Puerto Rico," Barea said when the Mavericks' playoff run last season came to an end in April. "We're going to have a long summer, so I have time to rest, I have time to work out and I have time to play."

Barea has averaged 22.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists through two games. His scoring average ranks fifth among all players, after having to pick up the slack with backcourt mate and Miami Heat guard Carlos Arroyo out with a left quad injury.

Seeing the 26-year-old Barea play well is no surprise to Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. The head coach only hopes that Barea's hot play in international basketball translates to the upcoming NBA season.

"To be a big part of an international tournament is a really big time thing," Carlisle said. "(After the World Championship) we've got to narrow our focus to the beginning of training camp and get everybody ready for that."

Though it isn't the stiff competition that Barea will face in the Association, the Puerto Rican squad's run-and-gun, fast-breaking style resembles the uptempo Mavericks' offense. Barea's ability to weave in and out of the lane has certainly translated at times to the pro game, including his 14-point effort in Game 3 of the Mavericks' opening round playoff series with the San Antonio Spurs.

Though the Mavericks fell, 94-90, in that game, the four-year veteran earned Carlisle's trust in big game situations.

"I was just going with a group that was going good. We needed penetration. (Barea) made good things happen. Offensively and defensively, he was active. He helped us when he was out there," Carlisle said after the loss.

The undersized guard also had Spurs coach Gregg Popovich scratching his head.

"He can penetrate, score or get the ball to someone for a three. He was really good (in Game 3)," Popovich said of Barea's play.

Soon Popovich may not be alone. With the numbers that Barea is putting up thus far in the Worlds, opposing NBA squads may be further puzzled when the young guard is on the floor in the 2010-11 season.

Inside Report: Chandler makes most of minutes, U.S. blows out Iran

Inside Report: Chandler makes most of minutes, U.S. blows out Iran

Through the first three games of group play in the FIBA World Championship, the minutes were few and far between for Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler while competing with Team USA. But that may soon change.

Wednesday was Chandler's international coming-out party, showcasing his full array of skills while getting extended playing time in a reserve role for the Americans, who are seeking their first gold medal since 1994 in the event held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Chandler, the only legit center on the U.S. roster, made the most of his increased game action in an 88-51 victory over Iran. Focusing on rebounding and being a force in the painted area at both ends of the court, Chandler recorded seven points on 3-for-3 shooting, seven rebounds (three offensive) and an assist -- all in 13 minutes of play off the bench.
"I can play as much as they need me," Chandler said, after missing time in each of the last two NBA seasons with nagging injuries before joining the Mavericks via a five-player trade with Charlotte this summer.

"I'm 100 percent now. I feel great before games, I feel great after games. I feel great before and after practice. So, I can play as much as they need me."

According to U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski, the 27-year-old Chandler -- who competed with the team in 2007 as well -- has accepted his role with the squad from Day 1, never once requesting more playing time or demanding more on-the-court involvement. Chandler averaged just over eight minutes per game in the first three outings for the team in the tournament.
"Tyson has been outstanding," Krzyzewski said when the team was training stateside last month. "We have a relationship from the 2007 qualifying team. One, he is such a good team member. Even when we're in the meal room, he'll make sure he's eating with different players. He's talking up. He doesn't need the ball."

"On any given night, you never know how the flow of the game is going to go. I think you always have to be ready to play. We have a deep team, so any guy can come off the bench and give us a spark -- or a starter can play big minutes for us. On our team, we just always have to be ready, and whenever our number is called we have to get out there and do what is expected of us," Chandler said.

But after Wednesday's performance, Chandler may have done enough to warrant a bigger role with the team. The 7-foot-1 Chandler and his ability to run the court, finish above the rim and alter shots on the defensive end of the floor -- all attributes that no other big man on the squad can provide -- could potentially be an X-factor for the team when it enters the knockout rounds. All of which was on display as the Americans remained undefeated with one game remaining before the Round of 16.

"(Chandler) does all the things to compliment our perimeter players, so he has a chance to be really important for us," Krzyzewski said.

Now will his minutes reflect that?
Team USA concludes Group B play on Thursday morning, matching up with Tunisia at 8:30 a.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPN 2.
