Barkley: Mavericks still one of the top four teams in the West
    http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont....59bbe629.html

NBA Hall-of-Famer Charles Barklet was interviewed on KESN-FM on Sunday to discuss the Dallas Mavericks and where they stand among the NBA Western Conference. Here are some highlights:

In your eyes, do you think the Lakers are still the best team in the NBA? Also, where do the Mavericks stand in the West?

You know, I do. The Lakers are still the best team. Including Miami, the Lakers are still the best team. I like getting Theo Ratliff and Matt Barnes.

They're still the best team, but Oklahoma City, Utah getting Al Jefferson and the Mavericks, there all right there together.

I think that everyone overreacted to what happened to them in the playoffs last year. I like the Dallas Mavericks team. Are they going to be favored? No, but I think they're one of the top four teams in the West. They just got a bad match-up last year. Because Dallas would have beaten Phoenix, you know? Dallas would have beaten Phoenix.

But the Spurs with their experience, I thing the Mavericks got a little tight. I think the people overreacted, but the Mavs are going to be fine.

Inside Report: Thomas returns to Big D

    http://www.nba.com/mavericks/news/in..._10_18_17.html

The Dallas Mavericks' search to find a veteran backup power forward has ended and it brings a familiar face back to Big D.
The Mavericks announced Wednesday that they have re-signed forward Tim Thomas to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not released by the team, though ESPNDallas.com, who first reported the signing, says the big man will make the veteran's minimum of $1.35 million.
Before being excused from the team in January to care for his ill wife, the 33-year-old Thomas appeared in 18 games for the Mavericks in 2009-10. The 13-year veteran started once and averaged 7.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 15.8 minutes a game last season. Showing that he still can score in a variety of ways, the former standout at Villanova connected on 46 percent of his shots from the floor and 37 percent from 3-point range. For his career, Thomas holds career averages of 11.5 points and 4.1 rebounds.

"(Thomas) brings a playoff mentality to our team," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said last season. "He came here for a chance to win a championship and he took a substantial pay cut for this opportunity. I'm proud of him and the way he plays."

Expected to see most of his time behind forward Dirk Nowitzki at the four spot, Thomas gives the Mavericks a versatile reserve. His shooting ability lends him to play some on the perimeter as a small forward in a bigger lineup, alongside Nowitzki and centers Brendan Haywood and Tyson Chandler. But his 6-foot-10, 240-pound frame also allows him to bang on both ends of the floor against the NBA's better post players.
"We have guys on the bench that have been around and know how to play the game," Thomas said last season. "I have a high confidence level and I'm trying to get a feel for everything."
With the signing of Thomas, the Mavericks now have 14 of 15 roster spots filled before the team reassembles for training camp in late September.

Inside Report: Chandler, Team USA sneak past Spain in exhibition

Inside Report: Chandler, Team USA sneak past Spain in exhibition

Coming off of a sluggish but victorious showing in their first of three overseas exhibition games, Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler and Team USA were back on the hardwood just 24 hours later.
On Saturday, the American squad found itself down 15-7 in the opening quarter against Lithuania in the first game of a back-to-back played in Madrid, Spain. While Team USA rallied to win, 77-61, Chandler said that the team's ability to battle back after trailing early will prove to be a valuable experience when the World Championship tips off this upcoming weekend.
"We faced some adversity early," Chandler said. "These are how the games are going to be played, they're going to be played physical. It took us some time to adjust to that. But, it's a good thing we have the opportunity to play these three exhibition games before we get into the tournament."
In the second test, the defending world champion Spaniards played host to the U.S. team. Chandler, who was moved to the second unit in favor of Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom after starting against France and Lithuania, saw his team in a tightly-contested game once again. Despite holding a double-digit lead for most of the first half, the Americans were forced to scratch and claw their way to an 86-85 win, after a late push from the Spanish squad ended with a game-clinching block by Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant as time expired.
Though Team USA narrowly escaped with the victory, adjusting from the NBA brand of basketball to the international style of play continues to be a work in progress, according to Chandler.
"We are use to our game, our style of play, our calls. I think a lot of times, we were stopping. Not only that, but defensively for us, it's different in our game. You kind of play as the ball comes towards you. Here, you got to be ready when the ball is on the other side of floor before it's even in your area, you already have to be ready defensively," Chandler said.
The team's final exhibition tuneup will come on Wednesday, as the Americans go head-to-head with the Greece squad in Athens at noon, just a day before one player must be cut to bring the roster down from 13 to the final 12 that will compete in Turkey. Chandler says battling through the difficult exhibition schedule is the perfect way to prepare for group play.
"We couldn't have scripted it any better for ourselves to go into the World Championship, into the tournament -- having to play a tough team like Lithuania then Spain then Greece in Greece," Chandler said. "Playing all these teams on their home soil is going to give us a different level of play, (coming) from them and their energy, than we're going to face."

Inside Report: Mavs' Chandler, U.S. impressive in final tuneup

Inside Report: Mavs' Chandler, U.S. impressive in final tuneup

Just a day after officially being named to the 12-man roster for the U.S. national team, Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler and his Team USA crew suited up for their final exhibition game before the World Championship tips off in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday.

The Americans journeyed to Athens to face off with the Greece squad on its home soil. Although Team USA was undefeated coming into the final tuneup, a more dominate performance than Sunday's 86-85 victory over Spain was desired before heading into tournament play.

With both teams emptying their benches and playing to remain healthy before the Worlds begin, the U.S. remained unbeaten heading into group play after capturing an 87-59 runaway victory on Wednesday.

"We wanted to make sure (we) came and played this game and didn't look forward to Turkey and look over Greece," Chandler told reporters after the game. "I thought we did that and we came out and played a good game and now it's time.

"We couldn't have scripted it any better for ourselves to go into the World Championship, into the tournament...Playing all these teams on their home soil is going to give us a different level of play -- from (the road games) and their energy -- than we're going to face."

Never one for stats, Chandler continued to concentrate on rebounding and the defensive end of the floor to help his team notch another win.

"That's how it's going to be throughout the tournament. We are going to have to allow our defense to turn into offense. We're a scrappy, athletic team. We got to allow that to transition into offense," Chandler added.

But perhaps more importantly for the Mavericks, Chandler -- Team USA's only true post presence -- continued to give a glimpse into what his NBA squad will have when the 7-footer returns stateside in time for training camp in late September. The Mavericks' newly acquired center played in just 51 games last season and 45 games the season before due to nagging injuries.

"Chandler has done great this summer," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said in a recent interview with Mavs.com. "He's coming off of a couple of surgical procedures over the last year, year and a half, and he's doing really well with them.

"That's great news for us," Carlisle added. "It's going to change the dimensions of our team a little bit, with his length and athleticism at the center position. So, you know, we're gonna knock on wood and cross our figures that his health situation can continue to be positive."

A healthy Chandler and his U.S. teammates now prepare for group play in Turkey to begin what they hope is a journey to a gold medal. Team USA's first matchup in Group B will be against Croatia on Saturday, in a game that will be televised on ESPN Classic at 11 a.m CT.

"The thing we need to do is understand that we're a group that's just coming together, so we have to improve game by game. We are competing against ourselves. We want the best that we can be in this short period of time we are together," Chandler said.
