I commend Jason Collins for coming out. Despite the sensitivity of the topic of the acceptance of homosexuality in our society and the legalization of same-s3x marriage, I find it really courageous of him to come out by writing a personal piece on the Sports Illustrated magazine especially as an first active NBA player to do so. Not too long ago, Americans were outraged when the government abolished segregation -- from African-Americans attending to schools to the fact Jackie Robinson suited up to play for the Dodgers (the first African-American to play in the MLB). Heck, even players back then were outraged about it. Now, we don't see it as weird that a white player are playing with or against not just black players also people of different ethnicity.

Like treating black players as a PERSON and accepting them to play in any sports, time will come that we don't see it as shocking to have homosexuals to play not just in the NBA, but in any other sport.

I don't know if you've seen a lot of his games, it seems like you're judging his game based on his sexual orientation and labelling him as "ate", a personal attack rather than a criticism towards his game. But I'll just post an excerpt from his piece on SI...

I'm not afraid to take on any opponent. I love playing against the best. Though Shaquille O'Neal is a Hall of Famer, I never shirked from the challenge of trying to frustrate the heck out of him. (Note to Shaq: My flopping has nothing to do with being gay.) My mouthpiece is in, and my wrists are taped. Go ahead, take a swing -- I'll get up. I hate to say it, and I'm not proud of it, but I once fouled a player so hard that he had to leave the arena on a stretcher.

SLAM DUNK: How Japan's Love of Basketball Can Be Traced Back to a Comic | SI.com

Of the four major sports leagues of North America, the NBA is, by light years, the most popular in Asia. While American media has often attributed this growth to the emergence of Yao Ming in the early 2000s, that’s simply an uneducated, misinformed guess (which I’ve gone out of way to bring up here in an interview with Voice of America and here in a feature in TurboJet magazine). I say this with no exaggeration, but in my six years of being around Asia, I’ve seen a Yao Ming jersey once — and that was in the form of a tribute on the day Yao announced his retirement (I’ve seen a Kobe jersey, oh, 4,000 times). In Hong Kong, I can say with 99.9% certainty that ballers here look up to the Kobes, the LeBrons, the Jordans, and that if you ask them to list players from whom they’ve drew inspiration, Yao probably wouldn’t even crack the top 15. Even in China, Kobe notoriously received a louder ovation — the loudest, actually — than Yao during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Yao’s influence on the NBA’s business opportunities in China is undeniable, but as far as influencing “Asian males to love basketball?”

    Please.

Whew! Jordan 6.. How I wish every shoe store owner today run his business like this guy!..Hehe

4: Slam Dunk gets sneakerhead/hypebeast culture.

Check out this hilarious piece in which Hanamichi and his crush go shoe shopping. The owner of the sneaker store sums up sneakerhead/hypebeast culture with his rant against dudes who buy just to collect. Remember, this was 1995, before Hypebeast became the go-to website for all these wanna-be street-types today, like my flatmate.
