Cesafi champ Cobras rout Negros State College of agriculture; Jaguars nip USLS
By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:04 am | Thursday, October 25th, 2012
The reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions Southwestern University Cobras put on a show as they walloped the Negros State College of Agriculture, 107-58, in the ongoing 17th Sandugo-University Games in Bacolod City.
Also, fellow Cebu team University of San Jose-Recoletos logged its second win in three games after beating the University of St. La Salle, 74-66.
The newly crowned Cesafi champions Cobras barely broke a sweat in their early morning encounter as they leaned on the prolific three-point sniping of Mythical Five guard Monbert Arong, who buried seven three-point shots and finished with 28 points without playing a single second in the fourth period.
Arong was supported by the team’s two Cameroonian imports Justin Aboude and Ben Mbala, who combined for 42 points.
The win hiked SWU’s record to 2-0 (win-loss) in the group stage. They finish their stint in the eliminations with a match against reigning UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks and the rest of the National University Bulldogs.
Parks suited up for NU for the first time in this tournament yesterday in an 80-56 win over the West Negros University Mustangs. He scored just two points and was content to be a facilitator in the team’s lopsided win, their third in as many games.
According to assistant coach Rocky Alcoseba, the loser of that match will take on the top seed of the other group that is being led by another UAAP squad the University of the East Red Warriors featuring the slam-dunking 6-foot-8 Cameroonian JM Arafat, who is eligible to play for UE in the 2014 UAAP season.
In men’s volleyball action, the University of San Jose-Recoletos Spiking Jaguars took care of the Holy Cross of Davao, 25-23, 25-17, 25-17.
tsk tsk murag ang cesafi hangtod vismin ra ang capabilidad.... layo pa kaayo sa level sa teams nga naa sa UAAP/NCAA

The reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball champions Southwestern University Cobras finally met their match in the 17th Sandugo-University Games as they fell to the National University Bulldogs, 67-74, at the end of the group stage eliminations yesterday in Bacolod City.
Back-to-back UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks, was unleashed upon the Cobras a day after playing in just 13 minutes and scoring just two points in his first game in the Unigames.
Yesterday, Parks scored 17 points and combined with incoming freshman, JJ Alejandro, who tallied 13 markers to deal SWU its first loss of the tournament. Guard Cedric Labing-Isa was also a headache for SWU with 10 points.
Cameroonian Ben Mbala and Melvin Goloran each had 12 markers to lead SWU which finished the group stage with a 3-1 (win-loss) record. Joseph Nalos and Monbert Arong each added 10 points for the Cobras which must now face the group D leader, University of the East, in the quarterfinals set at 3:30 pm today.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines also won over the University of Northern Philippines, 97-72 while the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University defeated the Ateneo de Davao, 95-77. Holy Cross of Davao College trounced Hercor College, 95-84.

The end of the road came for the reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions, Southwestern University Cobras yesterday after they lost to the University of the East Red Warriors, 75-79, in the quarterfinals of the men’s basketball competition of the 17th Sandugo-University Games in Bacolod City.
The Cobras of head coach, Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba had difficulty containing spitfire guard Roi Sumang who led the Red Warriors with 12 points. He also had ample support from JR Sumido and Cameroonian import JM Arafat who each had 11 points while JM Noble added 10.
SWU’s own Cameroonian player, Justin Aboude led the Cobras with 21 points but it was not enough as his compatriot, Ben Mbala, managed just seven markers. Cesafi Mythical Five guard Monbert Arong had 17 while Joseph Nalos and Melvin Goloran added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
In other results, the Adamson Falcons advanced to the semifinal round after beating Holy Cross of Davao, 95-51. The reigning Unigames and UAAP champions, Ateneo Blue Eagles also kept their dominance of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers which they beat in overtime, 58-56, in a rematch of the UAAP finals earlier this month, to advance to the semis.
SWU SPIKERS WIN
The spikers of SWU though, continued their onslaught in the men’s beach volleyball competition as the Cesafi winning pair of Relan Taneo and Rommel Pepito swept their four matches games yesterday.
They beat the University of the Philippines-Diliman, 21-9 and the Foundation University, 21-19 before finishing off their day with impressive victories over the College of St. Benilde and the University of Sto. Tomas.
The University of Southern Philippines Foundation tandem of Edward Ybanez and John Ylanan notched three wins yesterday. They edged the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 23-21, before beating Silliman University and Foundation University.
On the distaff side, SWU had an up and down day as the pair of Rapril Aguilar and Anna Sabanal, who replaced ace player, Danika Gendrauli following the death of her father, lost to Ateneo de Manila, 19-21, before defeating UNO-R.

Cebuano junior UAAP MVP Pingoy says he is not committed to any school yetBy Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:08 am | Wednesday, October 31st, 2012
Reigning back-to-back UAAP juniors MVP Jerie Marlon Pingoy of the Far Eastern University-Diliman put all the talk of his future collegiate home to rest yesterday as he firmly said that he has not committed to any school and is content to play out his high school basketball career first before making any decisions.
A report has popped up in the past few days that said that Pingoy has committed to the five-time UAAP champions Ateneo Blue Eagles while another report has pegged the youngster to the FEU Tamaraws saying that he has a written contract with the school.
But Pingoy, who steered the Baby Tamaraws to their first UAAP juniors crown in 25 years this past season, said he has not made any decisions as to where he’ll be playing college ball next season.
“I have not committed to any school yet. I have no idea where all those reports are coming from. There are a lot of schools that are trying to recruit me but I have not made any decisions with regards to that matter,” said Pingoy in his native tongue, while on vacation here in Cebu.
Pingoy, who averaged 21 points, four rebounds, five assists on top of two steals per game last season, also clarified the written agreement that he has with FEU.
“It’s not an official contract. It’s just an agreement that states that FEU will support my schooling as well as my siblings next season, should I join them,” he said.
Pingoy arrived here last Monday for what he says is a much-needed vacation to rest his weary body. “I’m just here to spend and enjoy time with my family. Life here is much different from that in Manila. Though I’ve already adjusted to life there, it’s still a different vibe here.”
He also said that for now, he is concentrating on trying to bring another title to FEU-Diliman as the Baby Tams are competing in the 1st Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship. After that will he make the decision.
“It’s really a lot of pressure on me. I just might return to the University of Cebu,” said Pingoy in jest. “But it’s alright. I’m just going to take my time and enjoy what’s left of my high school career.”
sa ako rang huna-huna.... logical choice ang pag-stay with the FEU system, long-shot is to sign up with NU's Coach Eric Altamirano, smart move is to enroll at UP kung asa siya ra ang star, money move is to sign up with Ateneo but then wala naman si MVP didto ..... worst decision to make is to come home to play ....
Cobras out to prove worth
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel (The Freeman) Updated November 04, 2012
CEBU, Philippines - The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras hope to further cement their lofty status as the king of Cebu collegiate basketball as they embark on a tougher challenge in the Southern Islands Championship of the prestigious Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) slated on November 13-16 at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras, under the coaching brilliance of Raul "Yayoy" D. Alcoseba, are automatically seeded to play in the Southern Islands final for being the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) champion.
"It's going to be another tough challenge for us but we're prepared and ready. Just like what we have shown in our CESAFI campaign this year, we will play with our hearts out and give whoever comes our way a good fight," said Alcoseba.
"We have to win the PCCL elimination to prove that we are the best team in the Southern Island," added the legendary bench tactician.
The Cobras made a historic title run in the region's premiere school-based cage league after they stunned the heavily favored University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers to earn a year-long bragging rights atop the CESAFI pedestal.
In the epic finale of their best-of-five series, the Cobras amazingly recovered from the depths of an 18-point deficit at the final seven-minute mark of the contest to frustrate the Lancers via a 73-72 cliffhanger in what is by far the greatest comeback in the annals of local hoopdom.
The UV Lancers of coach Felix "Donbel" Belano, Jr. again stand as the biggest obstacle in SWU's road to glory, this time on a bigger scale.
The two hardcourt giants are on collision course for a grudge rematch as they both seek for a precious slot in the PCCL Final Four.
But before thinking of revenge, the Lancers must hurdle first the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars at the start of the PCCL Southern Islands Championship on November 13.
The victor will square off against the winner of the other qualifying match between Visayas titlist West Negros College (WNC) Mustangs of Bacolod City and Mindanao champion Holy Trinity College (HTC) Wildcats of General Santos City on November 14 for the right to face the SWU Cobras.
The survivor will then proceed into the PCCL Final Four against the UAAP champion Ateneo Blue Eagles, NCAA crown-holder San Beda Red Lions and the champion in a Metro Manila qualifying round. (FREEMAN)
UAAP’s NU, NCAA’s San Sebastian play for PCCL slot in Cebu
By Rommel C. Manlosa

GIVING additional delight to the Cebu swing of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Sweet 16 tournament is the presence of two Manila-based schools, who are also seeking a slot to the Final Four.
Their games will not count for the Southern Islands Championships, as their battle is for the Luzon-Metro Manila slot to the Final Four.
Coming to strut their wares in front of the Cebuanos are the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines’ third placer National University (NU) Bulldogs and the National Collegiate Athletic Association third finishers San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags, who are also the defending champion of the annual competition for the best collegiate team in the country.
The Bulldogs-Stags game will be the main attraction on Nov. 14, after the game between the University of the Visayas Green Lancers and the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars and between Mindanao champion Holy Trinity College of General Santos City and West Negros University Mustangs of Bacolod City, in the Cebu Coliseum.
The Eric Altamirano-mentored NU will parade UAAP’s back-to-back MVP Ray Parks and its Cameroonian centers the 6’8” Henri Joel Atanga-Betayen and 6’7” Emmanuel Jean Mbe, while the Stags will play without its main man Calvin Abueva who is now with the Alaska Aces in the PBA.
In the absence of Abueva, interim coach Allan Trinidad will most likely make Ronald Pascual and Ian Sangalang his first two options in offense.
The winner of this game will play another Luzon-Metro Manila qualifier team in the opening game on Nov. 15—the date of the Southern Islands Championships, when the Cesafi 2012 champions Southwestern University Cobras will play the survivor of the UV-USJR vs. HTC-WNC game, in the main game.

Games today:
Cebu Coliseum
2 p.m. – UV vs. HTC
4 p.m. – SSC-R vs. NU
The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers took advantage of an uninspired effort by the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars to log a 79-55 victory and advance in the stepladder phase of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Southern Islands Championship yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The win put the Lancers one step closer towards gaining a rematch against the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, who beat them for the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) title last month.
But UV will first have to hurdle the Holy Trinity College of General Santos today at 2 p.m., after the Wildcats advanced following their 101-77 win over West Negros University earlier yesterday afternoon.
USJ-R shot itself on the foot in the third period, where it went without a field goal and scored just two points off two free-throws for a 31-65 deficit.
Wowie Escosio, Cesafi’s first-ever Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awardee, led the way for UV with 12 points in limited minutes.
Raffy Octobre and Rene Saycon added 11 points each.
Renato Abing paced USJ-R with 13 while Matthew Parker chipped in 12 markers.
In the first game, the Wildcats, champions of the Mindanao qualifiers held last month in Iligan City, got off to fast start, thanks to the 12 points of Christopher Masaglang, who had 12 of his 20 points in the first period.
HTC maintained a 43-34 lead at the half and then blew the game wide open in the third canto as it let go of a 19-7 blast anchored on Meylan Landicho that pushed the lead to 22, 72-50. The Wildcats erected their biggest lead of the match at 28 at 83-55.
Landicho finished with 18 points while McDenver Polistico added 15 points.
