veryx3 nice game yesterday, SHS-ADC vs CEC. hats off to both teams, sulit kaayo bayad, can't wait for the next encounter.
SHS AdC has to toughen up on the 1-2 positions as guard Asilum returns to serve the country this Oct/Nov. CEC badly needs ceiling to grab those rebounds. With all due respect to Coach Pepito, UV needs a fresh coaching perspective.
Any game pitting one of the top three teams against each other is going to be a must-watch encounter.
Everybody else has to step up and make the second round more exciting.

6:45 p.m. – USPF vs. UC
The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles used the painful memory of the finals sweep they suffered from Cebu Eastern College last year and paid the Dragons back in spades by crushing the defending champions, 92-86 late Tuesday night in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) at the packed Cebu Coliseum.
The two teams met in the finals last year where the Dragons trounced the Magis Eagles in three straight games to claim the crown.
But Ateneo de Cebu is back with a vengeance this year, armed with the lessons of last year’s blowout. Making the revenge sweeter was the fact that they climbed all the way back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth period to down the Dragons.
The Dragons looked headed for an easy win as they led, 28-19, in the second period. But the Magis Eagles persevered and sliced the deficit down to three, 41-44, at halftime then grabbed the drivers’ seat, 52-48, in the third canto after a tip-in by Dawn Ochea. But CEC fought back with a huge 15-3 rally behind veteran center Lyle Sumayang and forward Alfred Sedillo for a 72-61 advantage early in the fourth.
CEC remained on top, 83-74 after a jumper by Luther Huevos with 2:58 remaining but the Magis Eagles did not flinch in the face of imminent defeat. Baskets by big man Julius Cadavis and a three-pointer by Henry Asilum trimmed the deficit to one, 82-83. Then, after two free-throw misses by Huevos, lanky wingman Dave Yu canned a jumper from the keyhole area as the Magis Eagles snatched the lead with 1:19 remaining.
That was followed by a putback by Ochea and a free-throw by Cadavis that pushed their lead to four, 87-83. Sumayang then drilled a three-pointer that cut CEC’s deficit to one but Cadavis responded with two free-throws that kept the gap at three, 89-86. Huevos then missed a chance to tie the game with an errant trey-attempt as SHS-AdC ran away with its seventh win in as many games.
Ochea had 26 points for the Magis Eagles, Cadavis added 19 while Aaron Sing had 17 including five three-pointers, two of which sparked the comeback in the final frame.
Sedillo led CEC, which fell to 5-2, with 17 points even as Sumayang, Huevos and Bauya, had 16, 15 and 12, respectively.
Magis Eagles in soaring fit, but no match for CEC’s industry, 92-86| More | By Edri K. Aznar

IT ONLY took three games for the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons to win the high school division crown last season as it swept the Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles in three games.
However, the Magis Eagles showed that it won’t be as easy for the defending champions this season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) as SHS-AdC soared high and defeated CEC, 92-86, last Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum in the first meeting of both squads since last year’s finals.
After leading most of regulation and with a neck-and-neck third period, CEC entered the fourth quarter with a 72-61 cushion.
Three-point recovery
Sharpshooting guard Aaron Sing immediately started the fourth with back-to-back three pointers for SHS-AdC to cut down CEC’s lead to 72-67. SHS-AdC trimmed down the lead to just a point with a 6-0 run near the midway of the fourth, 74-73.
CEC increased its lead to 83-75 after a 9-2 rally with 2:59 left on the clock.
However, SHS-AdC took over the lead after scoring nine unanswered points, 84-83, with over a minute left in regulation.
Luther Huevos, who led CEC with 18 points, made a crucial mistake with a forced layup that could have taken the lead. Dawn Ochea, who scored a team-high 26 points for SHS-AdC, converted a basket on the other end for an 86-83 lead with 39 seconds left. He was also fouled on that played, but missed a bonus free throw, which was rebounded by Julius Cadavis.
The big-bodied center was fouled by Alfred Sedillo and converted one of the free throws for an 87-83 advantage. James Sumayang, who had 16, then sank a crucial three-pointer with 24 ticks left and shaved SHS-AdC’s lead to just a point at 87-86, but Cadavis answered with two points to make it 89-86.
Huevos then made another mistake and forced a three-point shot with still 12 seconds left, while Cadavis hit the dagger with a shot down low to make it 91-86.
Cadavis scored 19 points including nine crucial points in the final quarter. Sing also added 17 for SHS-AdC including five three pointers.
Sedillo was also a key player for CEC and contributed 17 points.
SHS-AdC now leads the high school division with an immaculate 7-0 record, while CEC suffered its second loss this season, 5-2.
Warriors vs. Jaguars
In today’s games, the University of San Carlos Baby (USC) Warriors take on the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars in the first game at 5:15 P.M., followed by another high school division matchup between the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers and the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters at 6:45 p.m.
After dropping its first five games, USC is on a two-game winning streak, while USJ-R won its last game. Both teams have similar records with USC at 2-5 and USJ-R at 2-4.
USPF, on the other hand, ranked fourth in the standings with a 4-3 record, while UC is looking for its
second win in the tournament with its lowly 1-5 slate, the second worst in the league.

CEBU, Philippines - The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles bravely wiped out an 11-point deficit in the third period then rallied to a huge 92-86 victory over defending champion Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons in a clash of junior division heavyweights in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season last Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Magis Eagles, now undefeated in seven starts, are poised to complete an 8-0 sweep as their final assignment in the first round will be against the smaller University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars on Friday at the USC-Main gym.
When asked how does it feel going closer to a 'Perfect 8', Magis Eagles coach ROMMEL Rasmo said:"Actually we're not talking of a sweep yet. I just want them to improve in every game."
Down by 11 points going into the final quarter, 61-72, Aaron Sing sank back-to-back triples to fuel a searing 12-2 run that pulled the Magis Eagles within just a hairline, 73-74, with still 6:03 left to play.
Despite they failed to grab the lead at once after a fiery exchange of baskets, the Magis Eagles showed a lot of maturity in defying any pressure and instead won the battle of nerves against the Dragons, who still enjoyed an 83-76 edge going into the final four minutes.
Dave Yu hit a medium-range jumper from the left wing to finally put the Magis Eagles on top, 84-83, following a fluid 8-0 run. Dawn Ochea and Julius Cadavis then took over in the remaining seconds to further add damage to the Dragons' monumental endgame collapse.
The Magis Eagles earlier turned a 41-44 deficit at halftime into a 52-48 lead in the third but suddenly lost that to the Dragons on James Neil Sumayang's charities, 55-54. Since then, both teams refused to wither and kept on trading shots to the delight of spectators.
Ochea, who was very effective at the post despite his slim built, topscored for the Magis Eagles with 26 points, while big man Julius Cadavis chipped in 19 markers. Third-quarter hero Sing netted 17 markers spiked with five treys, while Asilum, a wily guard who is a member of the PHL Youth team, banged in 11 points.
Luther Huevos had 18 points followed by Alfred Anecito with 17 for the Dragons. Neil Sumayang added 16 points, while Marvin Bauya and Rex Darwin Villarosa connived for 23 markers but to no avail as they suffered their second loss in seven games.

THE University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars lingered within the distance for the first two quarters before going full throttle in the final period to beat the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, 79-68, in the 2011 Cesafi High School Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.
The Baby Jaguars pulled a tricky 23-17 blitz in the third quarter to tilt a thrilling match into a lopsided affair.

USJ-R kept its momentum going while USC struggled under the pressure defense of the Baby Jaguars.
As the Baby Jaguars continued to hold on with a slim lead, USC made the final effort to turn the tide around in the final two minutes and struck within six points, 66-72, in the final 70 seconds, but USJ-R kept their composure, and with a 7-2 end-game run, they secured their second win in seven games.
