USJ-R is No. 1 Top Performing School in CPA Exam

On May 20, 2009, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the official results of the May 2009 CPA Licensure Examinations. Based on the official ranking by PRC, the University of San Jose – Recoletos (USJ-R) ranked No. 1 in Cebu, and No.2 nationwide among schools with 51-99 examinees. While the national passing rate was 28.88%, USJ-R obtained a passing rate of 49%, producing a total of 31 new Certified Public Accountants.
Additionally, Larianne Kristine C. Betancor, lands fifth (5th) in the topnotchers list. Betancor graduated Magna Cum Laude and has been a consistent dean’s lister.

Warm felicitations go to the College of Commerce, Dean Edgar R. Detoya and its competent faculty for continuing the legacy of excellence. In 2007, Jay Lord Zafra, CPA, landed third (3rd) in the same examination. In 2008, USJ-R ranked first (1st) nationwide in Category A (with 100 or more examinees).
The 2009 CPA board examination was given last May 10, 11, 17 & 18, 2009 in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and Legazpi.

In the first week of June 2009, the new Josenian CPAs will formally be honored in the presence of USJ-R administrators, faculty and students.
USJ-R is champion in 2009 “Bangga sa Kinaadman”![]()
USJ-R was declared overall champion during the inter-school “Bangga sa Kinaadman” last July 24 at the Department of Education Conference Hall.
Third year BS Hospitality Management student Alvin Pahati (1st prize), 4th year AB Political Science student Allan Quiñanola (3rd prize) and 4th year AB Mass Communication student Jun Niño Nalipay represented the university. Coached by Student Affairs Office (SAO) Director Atty. Jesus Velez and Mr. Antonio B. Soria, the trio - Pahati, Quiñanola and Nalipay competed with 20 other students from nine other colleges and universities in Cebu City.
Fifteen general questions on current events, politics, science, math, etc. were thrown every round. From 23, the ten highest scorers were selected to qualify for the semi-final round. From the ten, three highest scorers were selected for the final round. During this round, USJ-R’s Pahati and Quiñanola took the two slots together with the AB Political Science student of Cebu Normal University who place 2nd in overall ranking.
USJ-R’s high school representatives were also the overall champion in the high school category. The three USJ-R students competed with 119 other student representatives from the various public and private secondary schools in the City.
The winners received plaques of recognition and cash prizes.
The annual contest was conducted by the Cebu City Youth Development Commission (CCYDC) under the Cebu City Government. Sanguniang Kabataan Federation President and City Councilor Rengelle Pelayo said that the contest aims to discover potentials and seeks to recognize excellent high school and college students in the city.

The Best Business Plan Competition –Regional Finals, held on May 17, 2008 at Club Ultima, was concluded with three (3) groups from the College of Commerce of the University of San Jose-Recoletos raking the major awards. The competition was organized by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines – Zugbuana to encourage young people and promising entrepreneurs to conceive innovative business plans that are not only feasible but are also capable of creating a positive impact on society.
Three entries from Accountancy Department were sent by USJ-R to participate in the regional competition. All three of them secured the top positions, as follows:

The business plan entries were judged based on the innovative character of the product/service, the feasibility of the project and the positive contribution to society. The highly competent board of judges was composed of Robert Go (Owner of Prince Warehouse & former President of Cebu Chamber of Commerce), Richard King (CEO, Club Ultima & Crown Regency), Mike Lopez (National Youth Commissioner), and Augustin Palau (Owner of Design Ventures).
The proponents of Jatropha Carcus Plantation will be sent to Manila to represent the Visayas Region in the National Finals in June 2008. The winners in the National Finals will represent the Philippines in the International Business Plan Competition to be held in India in September 2008.
The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) of USJ-R was awarded as an “Outstanding Local Chapter in the Philippines” during the annual national convention of Accountancy students held on April 24-27, 2008 at the Leyte Park Hotel, Tacloban City.
The award was given in recognition of the local chapter’s multi-faceted activities, academic and non-academic achievements, as well as active participation in the Regional Council and National Federation of JPIAns.
Another highlight of the convention was the National Accounting Olympiad sponsored by the Professional Review and Training Center (PRTC) in which the USJ-R Accountancy team was awarded as the first runner up.

Along with other schools in Cebu, the University of San Jose-Recoletos fielded four (4) of its Accountancy students to participate in the regional mock CPA board exams given last February 2 & 3, 2008. All four of them landed in the top 5, as follows:

2nd placer – Ms. Nerissa Ranile, BSA-5
4th placer – Ms. Larianne Kristine Betancor, BSA-4
5th placer – Ms. Jerma Grace Baris, BSA-4

The Regional Federation of JPIANs facilitated the mock board exams which were held at the University of Cebu. They tapped the assistance of the Professional Review Training Center (PTRC) and Isla Lipana/Price Waterhouse-Coopers,one of the country’s leading auditing firms.
