    UV, SWU in PCCL

    By Rommel C. Manlosa

    Tuesday, October 9, 2012

THE Southwestern University Cobras-University of the Visayas Green Lancers hardcourt rivalry will continue after the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) season, and this time, they are up for a bigger prize.

Both teams are seeded in the Sweet 16 of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) and will be competing in the Southern Islands Championships, which will be hosted by Cebu in November.

They will be joined by the Mindanao and Visayas Champions in this step-ladder tournament, which will determine who will be the best collegiate team this year.

Last year, SWU played the UC Webmasters for the same title that brought the Webmasters to the Final Four competition in Manila.

And there could be three Cebu teams that will be playing for the Southern Islands title as the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, this year’s third placers, will also try to enter the Sweet 16 through regional elimination.

USJ-R will be joining the elimination-- which will be held in Dumaguete City starting next week—and will be competing against champion teams from Leyte, Ormoc, Iloilo, Negros Oriental, Bohol and Bacolod.

Both SWU and UV, however, are expected to play the championship round, and the winner will advance to the final four in Manila.

“The work is not yet done. We still have one more mission to accomplish and that’s the PCCL,” SWU head coach Raul Alcoseba said.

Since 2002, no provincial team has won the PCCL title, and becoming the first is the mission of both SWU and UV.

    UV wins Passerelle championship
    (The Freeman) Updated October 09, 2012 12:00 AMComments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Passerelle team made up for the earlier losses of its juniors and seniors teams in the CESAFI Finals by claiming the Passerelle division championship of the Milo-backed BEST Center SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament 2012 for Cebu.

Still reeling from its heart-breaking loss to Southwestern University in the CESAFI collegiate finals the night before, the Baby Lancers topped the University of San Carlos (USC), 62-56, last Sunday for its first ever Passerelle title in its three years of existence.

The win, though, didn’t come easy. After a hot start and taking a 23-9 lead after the first quarter, UV froze and was limited to a single point in the second quarter as USC rallied to cut the deficit to 24-23 at halftime. The champions recovered their bearing in the third quarter, with Jun Manzo pouring in eight points as UV took a 41-37 lead going into the payoff period that turned out to be tight and cardiac-like.

It was nip-and-tuck through the first eight minutes of the fourth period with USC repeatedly pouncing at UV’s slim lead but never making any headway until the final two minutes. Down 51-56, USC went to Paul Galinato and Carlo Ortega on a 5-0 run capped by Kurt Amores’s split charities with 2:02 left to finally tie the game at 56-all.

But just as the USC crowd erupted in cheers, Fredrick Pasturan quickly replied with a nifty side-step lay-up to give UV a 58-56 lead with 1:52 left. Tournament MVP Dave Cabanilla then added a free throw for a 59-56 lead with 1:31 left. Galinato had a chance to cut the lead to one with a trip to the line with 1:15 remaining, but missed both charities.

USC had another chance to score after UV was called for a 24-second shot clock violation, but couldn’t convert. Six missed free throws in the fourth period also didn’t help USC’s cause.

As USC fouled to stop the clock, Cabanilla added three more free throws for the final tally. Cabanilla led the UV attack with 20 points while Manzo added 10. Ortega led USC with 16 points, including 12 fourth quarter points in a heroic effort to keep USC in the game.

In the game for third place, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu vented its frustration from the semis loss to USC by beating Cebu Eastern College, 70-45. Janjan Jaboneta made up for his four-point performance in the semis by dominating with a game-high 19 points. Popoy Navarro added 10 in support. Cris Dominic Yap led CEC with 10.

UV, which entered the Passerelle scene in 2010 and was runner-up in 2011, will represent Cebu in the Visayas Regional Finals of the tournament to be hosted by Iloilo City on November 16-19.

They will face University of St. La Salle Bacolod, Ateneo de Iloilo and Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion of Roxas. USC had earlier won the SBP division crown and will go up against St. John’s Institute of Bacolod, Ateneo de Iloilo and College of St. John Roxas. (FREEMAN)

FIRST YEAR (in 6 years?) ever wherein no SHS ADC Magis Eagles team is playing in the Milo-backed BEST Center SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament 2012 for Cebu. What's wrong Magis Eagles? Still drunk from winning the Cesafi Junior's crown? Rebuilding starts now!

    Cobras’ straight path
    By Rommel C. Manlosa
    Tuesday, October 9, 2012

WHILE the Southwestern University Cobras will march straight to the Round of 8, which is a shot away from the Final Four, two other Cesafi teams will strive harder to earn their spots in the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League.

The Sweet 16 tournament will start on Nov. 9 in Batangas and will have its stop at the Cebu Coliseum on Nov. 13 to 15.

The Cesafi runner-up, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, and third placer University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars are in the Sweet 16 on Nov. 13.

But only one of them will advance to face the winner between the Visayas and Mindanao Champions game before they will play Cesafi 2012 champions SWU Cobras who are already seeded to the Southern Islands Championships on Nov. 15.

“That’s what we are preparing for right now. We know that we will meet the Cobras again. But, for now, we gave the team a week’s break,” UV head coach Felix “Donbel” Belano told Sun.Star-Cebu.

The Cobras also expressed their preparedness during the turnover of the championship trophy to their biggest contributor Michel J. Lhuillier at the M. Lhuillier Group of Companies Main Office at the North Reclamation Area yesterday.

Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, SWU chairman of the board of trustees Maris Johanna Holopainen and athletic director Ryan Aznar handed Lhuillier the trophy in a ceremony that lasted nearly five minutes.

Lhuillier, in return, gave SWU a cash reward of P100,000 for their victory.

Meanwhile, aside from the best teams in the south, the Cebuanos will also see two Manila teams who are also seeking a slot in the Final Four.

UAAP third placer NU Bulldogs will be coming to play the NCAA third placer.

The Manila team, however, has no part in the Southern Islands Championship, which is again expected to be another blockbuster event.

However, the winner of the UAAP-NCAA game here will get the chance to take a shot for the Luzon-Metro Manila Qualifier.

The Southern Islands champion will join the Luzon-MM qualifier and the UAAP and the NCAA champions in the round robin game in the Final 4, which will be held in Manila starting Nov. 21.

All set for Southern Island C’ship
Holy Trinity College completes cast after beating STI-CdO in Iligan

    By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 6:48 am | Monday, October 22nd, 2012

The cast is complete for the teams that will play here in Cebu for the Southern Islands Championship of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL), which will be held on Nov. 13 to 15 at the Cebu Coliseum.

This after the Holy Trinity College of General Santos upended last year’s Mindanao champions STI-Cagayan de Oro, 100-78, in the Mindanao regionals of the tournament at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology gym in Iligan City.

The Wildcats got 27 points from Christopher Masaging to lead the way for the squad to make it to the Sweet 16, where they will face the Visayas regionals titlists West Negros University on Nov. 13.

Also contributing significant numbers for Holy Trinity were Denver Polistico and Kevin Pragados, who combined for 30 markers.

The winner of the game between the Wildcats and the Mustangs will be taking on the winner of the game between Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation (Cesafi) runners-up University of the Visayas and third placers University of San Jose-Recoletos.

The winner of that match set for Nov. 14 will battle Cesafi champions Southwestern University for the Southern Islands title and the right to advance to the Final Four slated Nov. 15.

Also making a sojourn to Cebu are the Letran Knights and the National University Bulldogs, who will face one another on Nov. 14.

Alcoseba eyes Cebu’s first PCCL title

SOUTHWESTERN University Cobras head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba is setting his sights on becoming the first Cebuano team to take the elusive Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) national title.

However, he would not take Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) 2012 runner-up University of the Visayas Green Lancers lightly as the former champions are most likely the Cobras’ main obstacle in their quest to claim a slot in the Final Four.

Check our new look and tell us what you think.

But before the big wars ahead, Alcoseba recalled the historic finals that gave the Cobras their first-ever Cesafi championship.

“That was tough and sweet. We lost three games in the elimination round and right during our very first game, we lost one player to an injury. But tough men are not made overtime. It’s very sweet to look back and make that as our inspiration toward our goal,” Alcoseba told reporters.

In a coaching career that started in 1984, Alcoseba has a handful of collegiate championship—four in the defunct Cebu Schools Amateur Athletic Association (two with USJ-R and two with CDU) and currently one with Cesafi.

Alcoseba, however, also has two national inter-collegiate championships—in 1985 and 1987.

This record pales in comparison to the number of championships he won as the coach of the country’s winningest amateur ball club M. Lhuillier basketball team.

But unlike the M. Lhuillier team, where all players are already polished, coaching a collegiate team has always been a challenge to him.

“My basic principles in coaching are motivation, discipline, hard work and patience. Follow this religiously and you can be a winner,” said Alcoseba.

SWU is seeded to the Southern Islands Over-All championship, and a win will get them a spot in the Final Four in Manila.

“Again, it would be a tough road ahead but with better physical and mental preparation, maybe we can get what we want,” Alcoseba said.

The PCCL has already started and it will make a stop at the Cebu Coliseum on Nov. 13 to 15 for the Southern Islands Overall championships.
