On the old Roman calendar, there where only 10 months.
December is derived from the latin word "decem" meaning ten(10). Since its the 10th month of that calendar.
Same with October which is from the latin word "octo" meaning( 8 ) and the eighth month of the the same calendar.
The month names kinda just got retained even when months where added to the calendar when they added months for the monthless winter periods. The monthless period was divided into two months namely January and February.
