Reservi ko anang Halfmoon nimo ha hehehehe thanks!
@ all:
A couple of weeks from now, I'm going to sell some of my Red fries so that I could have enough moolah to purchase new strains, buy extra tanks etc...
As you know, breeding Halfmoons does not give any assurance that all of it's offsprings would become Halfmoons when the time comes that their fins are fully developed... Inexperienced breeders (me included) would be lucky to have around 5-10% Halfmoons from a spawn of Halfmoon parents...
Instead, these fishes that have caudal fins less than 180 degrees but are 170+ degrees are called Super Deltas or "Halfmoon geno" (meaning they carry Halfmoon genes and will pass it on their offsprings, that is why it is best to breed siblings)... Super Deltas are still very desirable fin strains although it would be obvious that they would cost less than Halfmoons.
My pair (parents of the fries) are indeed Halfmoons, meaning their fins have the same shape as that of a protractor (180 degrees) or a letter "D"... Since the fries are now 2.5 months old and I could already tell the males from the females, I would be separating the males soon as they begin show their aggressiveness already to avoid torn fins.
To label any of my fries as Halfmoons when I sell them is dishonest on my part since they do not flare (display ther fins in all its glory) yet... So, I cannot tell as of the moment if indeed some of my fries can spread their caudals to a full 180 degrees!
In conclusion, I would refer to my fries as of the moment as Super Delta fries, or Halfmoon genos...
Heck, I sure as hell would sell them in a price a bit less than what I got for their parents which is 1,500 pesos (900 for the female, 600 for the male)...
If you do decide to get a Super Delta pair and breed them, fear not coz they CAN AND WILL PRODUCE HALFMOONS! Heck, you might be ever luckier or better than me! You might get more Halfmoons from a Super Delta pair!
So, a couple of weeks from now, I would be selling some fries (not decided yet how many since I would be keeping at least 2 pairs to continue the line)... I'm just waiting for the male fries to start flaring so I could tell if indeed I was able to produce Halfmoons (I'd be so proud of myself for that)!
From bettatalk.com:
"So you bought the best halfmoons you could find. Maybe you even went to a breeder whom you trusted to be sure to get siblings. Or maybe you bought the best you could regardless of breeder.
And the fry have super delta tails, or even rounded edges. Hmph. The few that might make the cut grow long anal fins and the dorsals go to fizzy twisty messes.
Welcome to the world of Halfmoons.
So you wrote the breeder or went on public forums, where they tell you only 10 percent of the spawns will be halfmoon regardless. Bummer."
Thanks...
