Bulls fire Del Negro
Vinny Del Negro was fired as the Chicago Bulls’ coach on Monday night, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Del Negro was informed of the decision in a meeting with general manager Gar Forman on Monday night at the team’s practice facility.
Multiple outlets had reported that the decision to fire Del Negro had been made and would likely come by Tuesday.
Despite two trips to the playoffs and a .500 regular-season record in his two seasons as coach, sources say Del Negro was fired largely for an impaired relationship with Forman and VP John Paxson.
Yahoo! Sports first reported that Paxson had stormed into Del Negro’s office after a March 30 game, grabbed his tie and shoved him in the chest because he was angry that the coach had played center Joakim Noah(notes) too many minutes. The organization had a minutes limit on Noah because of a foot injury.
The Bulls came close to firing Del Negro in December, and Yahoo! Sports reported that team executives had been gathering information about potential candidates.
Del Negro has one year left on his original three-year deal, and the Bulls will owe him approximately $1.9 million.
Sources say that Forman will lead the search for a new coach, and possible candidates include Avery Johnson, Doug Collins, Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau, Jazz assistant Tyrone Corbin and former New Jersey Nets coach Lawrence Frank.
The Bulls have scheduled a news conference for noon ET on Tuesday to announce the dismissal.
