@omad: i'm not really familiar with the in and out of transportation costs in NYC since i myself don't live near the city. but i know for sure that driving around NYC is not only expensive, but very stressful as well. i'd say it's based on experience coz i have to drive within the city whenever we go visit some family friends down in Queens and i drove down 42nd street with my car and it stressed me out like hell. i swear to God i would never do that again. for me, the last thing i would wanna do while i'm alive is to be a taxi driver in NYC.

i'd rather drive around DC than in NYC that's for sure. anyway, i guess it's a smart move to get EZ pass when you decide to bring your car around the city.

oh, forget about parking your car... that's another story. you'd get lucky if you find a spot, unless you're ready to pay huge amounts.

oh, forget about parking your car... that's another story. you'd get lucky if you find a spot, unless you're ready to pay huge amounts. Very stressful indeed. But you'll manage as time passes by. I am also used to driving in a defensive manner when I used to live in Dallas before moving here. It's really crazy driving around Manhattan from 8am to about 9pm on business days because of the sheer volume of traffic. It doesn't help driving with a sea of yellow cabs zooming in and out of your lane either. Expletives are a common greeting by every driver you encounter in the city. Hand gestures are also a sign of welcome. The middle finger generally means "Welcome to New York".

Parking is another story. If you're too concerned about scratches on your bumpers and you'd easily get riled-up when your car gets one, I tell you, don't buy a car. Remember those good ol' days driving bump-cars in Cebu? That's how you squeeze into tight parking spots in Manhattan, pushing the car in front of you with your bumpers. In and Out, In and Out. Doesn't matter really if it's a Beemer, Benz, Audi or any high-end cars but when you don't park properly and leave too much space then expect your car being bumped forward or backward by those taking the parking spot. That's guaranteed.
Shut Up! Let your GAME do the talking!

    hahahaha that's really true.

my mom... she lived in Queens for 13 years before she moved upstate; she's got a Nissan Altima and boy her car's rear bumper is full of scratches. just a little advice though, make sure you equip yourself with those steering wheel locks if you park on the side of the streets of New York. breaking a glass by a passerby is common, so it's better that your things get stolen from the inside of the car than getting YOUR own car stolen. lolz.

it also helps if you're good with directions since getting around corners in New York is crazy unless you're a veteran and you pretty much know where you're going. i remember one time when i let my gf drive the car in front of Port Authority and she asked me if i could drive instead... we actually had to switch spots while waiting at a stop signal coz she just couldn't drive anymore (with all the cabs beeping at you). so yeah, that was a funny experience.

i'd say my mom is a veteran driver when it comes to driving in NYC. the scratches in her car is proof enough.
