English speaking Filipinos - what's your opinion?

To speak English is not trying to become an American. Not only Americans speak English. The British, the Australians... If you find your self in Norway airport and have questions, you don't speak Norwegian (unless of course you know how) to ask questions do you?

i was referring to Filipinos speaking conversational english with another Filipino [in the Philippines], miss. if they speak it in America, fine, they can do it. pero bisan man gani sa America, hilas gihapon paminawn. ako i'm in America, and i have a lot of Filipino friends here, and we don't speak in English. why? because it's awkward, that's why.

When I hang out with my fellow-Filipinos (family and friends here in the USA), we speak Cebuano but when there is an Ilongo or Tagalog nasagul- (since our Tagalog are worse than Pacman's mother), we speak English. Now, they are Filipinos too and we speak English amongst each other, so does that mean we are unpatriotic to our Filipino heritage? So, is that awkward?

Even amongst pure Cebuanos who get together, bisan sa kalye sa Cebu, sa tabi-tabi, last time I was there, no such thing as Cebuano jud kay walay Cebuano sa word nga "spaghetti" or is there?

A lot of Filipino acquaintances here in the USA, they say they are pro-Filipinos at heart but when they dress (especially women-you can see through their soul, and the guys? obvious they do not want to be called Filipinos -wala nagkdimao ang outfit), the way they act are opposite of what they say. Action speaks louder than words. Kung Jose Rizal nag-ingon, ang taong di marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay masahol pa sa malansang isda -"it was along that line" People realize that people who say one thing to avoid the real truth of their inability, are worse than a gross rotten fish out in the sun.

Some Filipinos say they are pro-Filipinos at heart so they do not speak English as much as they should when they are here in the USA or just hanging out with fellow Filipinos, because either they know they can't, just their inability, or refusal to improve their skills. And they wonder, why they can't land a job that pays better than $300 a week, they're just there sucking a bunch of US taxpayers' money in welfare getting some free money from the government and food stamps because that is pro-Filipino (that must be something to proud of), or in a lot of case, jobless staying with parents in 3-bedroom house but 7-10 other members.

Well, I do not watch Filipino shows. I do not have TFC (I wish). I do not have much time to watch TV other than in the morning as I sip coffee, just morning daily news. When I go to my friend's house, when they have their TFC on, I watch actresses/actors, it must just be me, so that's awkward too that these local personalities would speak a language other than Filipino as they speak or are being interviewed. Hmmmn interesting!

Now, we are in the same page in some way. But mind you, it's just my opinion that may or may not apply in all demographics or to all of us or all situation (since the title is a little too broad). I just have the urge to kill my time as I sit here while at work and make as many posts as I can to reach my 30 total goal.

Whatever language that a person is able to express herself/himself (bisan Martian or Plutonian) as long as not trying to pretend somebody else. Kung Bisaya ka, mao jud na ikaw, hala sige. Just do not say something, tell people you believe in one thing but then the complete opposite. Because that's creepy.

I understand other people's feeling about some of us nga kaistorya vendor, then klaro kaayo nga pahak ug English, ambot nganu na. But so far, since I was back in Cebu wala man ko nakataghap ingon ana nga tawo. Kung gusto mag-praktis, I am also fine with that. At least naa gutts. Pero ang vendo nga kaistorya wala nakasabot.... mao na kana run, problema na jud kaayo. Pero ayaw pagsakit kay nasuya ka kay ikaw wala gutts to praktis or worried what other people may say.

But I also have problem with our kababayans nga perti manaway sa English grammar ug pronunciation sa uban. I mean come on.... at least that person is trying. Like Pacman, sus mga cousins nako nga nagdaku diri sa USA, wala raman, kasabot man sa gisulti nga English ni Pacman, pero ang uban grabe kaayo makapanaway (I mean some ways are funny though). Kadtong kusog manaway, silay pasultion, papapractison kay naa diri sa USA, sus nitikuku, dili na lang mo-try ug pangita trabaho kay ang interview kay English baya unya ang American interviewer wala man kasabot..... so tua jobless si Ingkong.

i never said it's unpatriotic if we speak English amongst each other. please don't put things out of context. i just said it's AWKWARD if two Filipinos converse in English especially in the Philippines, and in some cases, even in America. ambot lang basta para nako it would seem uncomfortable nga kamong duha nagdako mo'g Pilipinas and you two start conversing like you grew up in the U S of A... murag wa sa tono.

usa pud, kung dili ko kahibaw mag TINAGALOG, nya samotan pa gyud nga BUAK-BUAK akong iningglis, maypa siguro maninguha na lang kog tinagalog kaysa i'd look foolish trying hard to speak english when akong ka istorya PINOY ra pud sama nako. haha!

again, i'm referring to CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH. dili word per word translation. naay diay binisaya sa spaghetti? *facepalm*

you seem to have a 19th century mentality. what's an outfit got to do with being a Filipino? have you ever been back to the Philippines? kita ka's mga batan-on didto, grabe na kaayo ug outfits. does that mean dili sila FILIPINOS AT HEART?

it's showbiz, and these people are actors/actresses and are bound to be criticized by the public. if you ask me? naay times nga awkward kaayo paminawon. but ambot lang pud sa uban. pero naa man sad gyud uban artista nga maayo mu iningglis and articulate sama ni KRIS AQUINO ug BOY ABUNDA. but again, ngano naabot naman kag artista? we're talking about regular pinoys in regular day to day conversations.
