There is no sentimentality about that, sometimes I felt that the way we can be united as a nation is through fighting a common enemy in a war. We have always been separated (even as negligible as a dialect) from each other.. As history tells us we have never really stand on our own. It's good if the bases are here, but chances are our force and equipment will still be that mediocre.
Ang langaw nga naka tongtong sa kabaw, langaw lang gihapon..
That's not the sentimentality I meant. What I mean is false pride and that unnecessary, even dangerous form of nationalism - The one that keeps us blind and unreasonable to accept we are desperately in need of help from outsiders (ie. Americans). As I said, S.Korea and Taiwan are not poor countries but they still work along-side the US. Meanwhile in the Philippines, even though we're piss-poor and obviously in need of help resort to nationalistic pride.
While some people (usually the Left) don't want the Americans intervening because its against our country's 'sovereignty' and the VFA is 'unconstitutional' they themselves can't do anything at all. This Chinese invasion thing is probably giving them wet dreams.
I totally agree with you here. As Filipinos, it's our responsibility to protect our country. If we really need help, that should be the last resort. Dili ta dapat mongayo dayon ug tabang sa US and give that responsibility to them instead. That's why we should focus on diplomatic solutions at this point.
