Dragons improve defense, trounce Baby PanthersBy Jonas Panerio

After a lackluster showing last Saturday, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons bounced back with a vengeance as they vented their ire on the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, 79-60, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The victory, CEC’s fifth in six games, was made possible by an explosive second half, wherein they upped their defense that sparked their uptempo offense.
USPF actually led, 32-27, at halftime but crumbled in the face of CEC’s pressure defense and the hot shooting of Lyle Sumayang and Marvin Bauya.
An 11-0 run turned the tide for the defending champions with a floater by Luther Juevos tying the game up at 35-all and a jumper by Sumayang finally giving them the lead. Sumayang and Bauya each had 22 with the latter canning five three-pointers.
Rommel Diapera scored half of USPF’s total output with 30 markers.
In other games, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors got their second win of the tournament with a 70-59 win over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens.
The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) also won over Don Bosco, 85-74.
In a late game last Saturday, the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers defeated Don Bosco, 79-54.
Baby Lancers maul Greywolves By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 05, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)
CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers mauled the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves, 79-54, to stay at second place in the secondary division of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Baby Lancers, thus, ended the first round of elimination with a 7-1 win-loss record behind the unbeaten Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles (5-0). Sacred Heart School's remaining two games are against UC and CEC. (erratum: SHS AdC last game is against USJR)
The big game that the Baby Lancers are anticipating is tomorrow's heavyweight showdown between the Magis Eagles and reigning champion Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons as the outcome will decide who will be the elimination round topnotcher.
The Baby Lancers could end as the top qualifier in case of a triple tie.
The Baby Lancers defeated the Dragons, 62-47, in the August 7 season opener but lost to the Magis Eagles, 73-79, last August 31.
Lendyl Earl Dale Undaloc had 16 points for the Baby Lancers, who were in full command right from the start. The Greywolves could only pull within 14 points, 39-53.
Carmel Leix Mellijor and Stephen Niere paced the Greywolves with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The scores
