You are overestimating our importance as a market. These big 3 are not called the big 3 for nothing, they have a presence in nearly every country around the world. One cannot blame them for taking advantage of our weaknesses. The fact of the matter is, we are far too dependent on oil, that is why it is expensive here and not so in other countries that have more diversified transport systems and power grids. If you reduce demand, prices will fall. The prices any oil firm charges here are going to ultimately be beyond the power of government, no matter what laws they pass and no matter how much Gwen Garci jumps up and down in fury.

What is under their control are a few things that have a direct impact on demand: transport systems, power and green technology. They should not blame the oil firms for their failure to establish alternative forms of energy. In other countries, they have coal-fired plants, nuclear technology, even wind-powered turbines, whereas we almost exclusively rely on gasoline-fuelled power stations. It's all a part of our shortsightedness starting from the Ramos era, when there was a scramble to set up enough power plants to serve our energy needs, and the easy way out was to build more refined-oil plants because at that time oil was cheap. During that same period, countries like France have reverted from nearly 100% reliance on oil to 90% reliance on nuclear power. Look at China now and the number of nuclear and coal power plants they are building.

Whether they are colluding or not, the fact of the matter is, we are giving them an excuse to collude with regards to pricing. If demand were brought down, they would automatically break their alliance and start competing for the few customers they have left. That is just the simple law of economics I'm afraid that the government and our simple-minded pols are not getting. Even if the big 3 left, and others came in their place it won't make a difference, those new players will resort to the same tactics because they are simply matching demand with price as is to be expected in a market economy...
