We do have an identity now whether we like it or not, and that is called "incompetent and unreliable." The blame should fall squarely on the political elite who form our government. We are too proud of our democracy but it is not proving to be a good example to other nations. Chinese government might be secretly happy that our country made such a mess of this, that way they can tell their people that democracy is no good and that in a dictatorship, police are better trained and equipped. Is there any doubt that if this incident occurred in China, it would have been handled better? Watching the events unfold in the news was just too painful to watch, it was like watching children playing cops and robbers.

The absence of CRAB MENTALITY !! Up for you !

Mao its hard for the FILIPINO PEOPLE to have its own identity because we tend to like better being NOT UNITED . We tend to come up lots of conspiracy theories , chismis , etc rather than coming up with a solution instead of being a problem .

In my opinion, the government was caught off guard when the hostage incident took place on Monday, because it is so busy chasing people who did not pay their taxes. And, the government's vow for full transparency had backfired that almost electrocute all of them.
I think that's their biggest problem, instead of accepting responsibility, they are trying to look for ways to always blame the previous administration. You are the president, the buck stops with you. And let's face it, there were a lot of things he could've done which he didn't, this added the frustration. The policemen that we're there wasn't really Manila's finest, where were the PNP's Special Action Force (SAF) who are more equipped and well trained to handle this situation? The president had that at his disposal, and knowing this could have grave diplomatic impact, he should've used the SAF.

I cannot help but agree with what GMA's spokespersos said when asked if they failed to equip and train the police force. She said that they were the same police before, the difference is just the one commanding. And having observed previous similar crises, they were handled much better. This just goes to show that there is a real lack of leadership in this administration. This could have proved Noynoy's doubters that he is capable of being the president, instead, it gave his detractors more reasons to question his capacity.

While I agree that we should work together and move-on, I also believe that this leadership should first accept their responsibility and shortcomings instead of passing on the blame. That has been the trademark of this administration, passing the blame whenever they find it convenient. How can we move forward with an attitude like that coming from the leadership? How can they expect people to trust them when they don't have a sense of responsibility.

There were a lot of lessons learned from this disaster, and I truly hope that Noynoy learned a thinkg or two about proper crisis management.

we cant expect penoy to do something hes popularly known for doing nothing.

its not his job to do or order.. media blackout, crowd control, answering CE Tsang call or even calling him back asap, putting up a much more equip team, or placing a better team of negotiator, and why not hand him his demand (give his job back) and arrest mendoza after.

lets accept it his biggest mistake was.. nag-smile2x siya which infuriate the chinese.

lets not be crab and be united.. against chinese criticism and accept the shame.

Agree. Pero lesser ra unta ang effect if the gov't of pnoy took this very seriously. Created crisis management, handled well mendoza's demands, handled well mendoza's family, manage the international media as well as local, manage HK's Tsang, issue statements periodically - in other words, there should be somebody on top of the situation. None, none, it was NONE. Pnoy's men and himself came out after the bloody ending! so late, so late for a hero.....

HE let the "experts" handle the crisis! So what's the result now? Karon pa sila kabuang og handle sa consequences....

kung si GMA pa ron, ulan gyud ug criticisms. but she fair well during her time.

Minority solons praise GMA on hostage crisis handling - Yahoo! Philippines News

Quezon Province Rep. Danilo Suarez cited the better batting average of Arroyo and her team, noting several hostage and abduction cases happened during the last 9 years where there were minimal, if not no fatalities at all.
