Why my son left ADMU, by Mark Tallo

To the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) administration, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude for their support and guidance to Mark Jayven "Mac-Mac" Tallo for his entire two month stay in Manila.

Before anything else, I would like to congratulate Coach Norman Black for bagging the championship title in the recently concluded Fil-Oil pre-season basketball league. He is indeed a very good coach.

However, with the current relations that my son has with ADMU, I am somewhat disappointed with the information Coach Black has relayed to the press in Manila and in Cebu with regards to how my son left ADMU to return to Cebu. He distorted so many facts that my son came out as the bad guy in the whole situation.

For the record, I never wished for instant stardom for my son and we never asked for specific minutes of playing time. I never even took part in the negotiation when my son was recruited to the ADMU team.

It was Mr. Jack Huang (ADMU alumni president-Cebu chapter, and respected alumni in Manila) who relayed to me the information regarding their plan for my son if he joins ADMU. Jack Huang's said that Coach Black would use Mac-Mac as soon as possible because Emman Monfort was set to graduate last March.

When I went to Manila together with the CEC Dragons, Coach Black told me that he will really use Mac-Mac because of the departure of Monfort, but he did not specify any playing time. He insisted on using Mac-Mac because they will have no point guard this school year. Honestly, Coach Black has so many unfilled promises to my son.

My son was left sitting on the bench most of the time, even against the weakest of teams that they were playing during the pre-season games (Fil-Oil and Fr. Martin's Tournament).

He was not even included in the practice rotation. I was in Manila last June 3 to 5, and Coach Black did not talk to me regarding my son's situation. I asked Paulo Trillo (ADMU team amanger) for his status and all he told me was that my son is OK.

On June 6, before the game against Mapua, Coach Black said words to my son about his impatience for instant stardom and that he should wait for everyone to graduate before he gets a chance to play on the court. My son felt insulted and embarrassed, so right after the game, he packed up his things and left. Where were Coach Black's promises about husing him, I will never know.

The administration keeps contacting us even up to now for Mac-Mac's return to ADMU. As of the moment, we have offers from other teams in Manila but we have to settle this issue with ADMU before we choose what university is best for my son.
If this is true nga even practice rotation dli xa included...so unsaon pg improve aning Bataa nga bsan sa practice rotation dli mn diay apil...if tnoud mn gne aw lisod jd iyang status did2,,...

I have problem fully accepting Mr. Tallo's side/explanation. I know some of the facts and that the only reason ADMU MAY be contacting him is to return the numerous pants that were given to him by teammates and the team jerseys he has in his possession . They already have a replacement in the pipeline.

Mr. Tallo mentions na never sila nag-expect ug playing time.

"For the record, I never wished for instant stardom for my son and we never asked for specific minutes of playing time. I never even took part in the negotiation when my son was recruited to the ADMU team."

Yet ang rasyon ngano ni biya sila was playing time. He is contradicting himself. Maybe he should mention he requested that he "be allowed" (expenses paid) of course to travel with his son for the US training.

It seems that the father is trying to cover his own a$$ just in case this play does not work out in the end for his son.

    I wish Macmac the best.

He is too skilled not to find a (college) team somewhere, whether he will learn how to play in a system is the question. Will what he learn there be enough to get him to be a star Pro or a journeyman 3rd-4th string guard in PBA (like his dad ) is now a roll of the dice.

Every team has to have a system and disciplined players to play within it to succeed. Just ask the greatest bball player ever how many titles his skills won before he followed the triangle offense. The last player who looked like he felt "entitled" was taught a lesson by the Mavericks just a couple of days ago.

I don't think so. He was officially in the line-up for the FilOil.

As for practice time. People close the Ateneo Men's Basketaball Team would know that the last 2 months or so has seen very limited practice time.

Ni-adto sila sa training camp sa US ug sa Dubai for the exhibition game vs DLSU. That was while having games in the Fil Oil AND the Father Martin Cup. Most of their court time has been actual games.

To give an example in reality Greg Slaughter has only been practicing with the Blue Eagles for a short time since his release from Gilas. He had too many National team commitments previous to that.

Personally I think Tallo was being kept as a secret weapon for the second round of the UAAP. Buenafe's status was still in limbo then and Ravena was a known product. Coach Norman always pulls surprises during the season. I think Tallo would have been his microwave off the bench once he got the flow of the team.

Just like whether his leaving is right or wrong.... Now we will never know.

Please see my reply re: playing time.

We don't know what Mark Tallo's definition of not being in the rotation. 4min? 12min? Aside from the Phenom/Ravena and Slaughter who is not a true rookie, rookies hardly get playing time with the Blue Eagles. They hardly even get on the team. Experience is part of their championship mystique.

Murag John Wall heading to Miami and asking to handle the ball right off the bat? I'm sure if the Eagles didn't have a proven cast MacMac would have gotten 25min a game as a rookie, but his collegiate record would have been sub .500.

Sayangt lang siya sa CeSafi. Not to knock our local leagues but the talent and competition is still in the UAAP.

Coach Black made it clear nga if you are a rookie and you expect 25-30 minutes playing time, you are in the wrong basketball team....Ang gi-tan-aw gud sa Ateneo kay katong ilang mga player nga nihinog sa sa ila system mao gyud ang gamiton for the current UAAP season.

So mas maayo ra sad nga nibiya si Mac2x karon nga sayo2x pa kay dili gyud unya siya malipay didto but if patient lang siya daghan kaayo possible mahappen within the season na as long nga naa lang unta siya sa team A sa Ateneo. Studying in Ateneo perhaps would have been the best consolation for being patient kay basketball 1st ug education 2nd man kaha para niya.

    Black

“Wala man mi mag-dali nga gamiton dayon si MacMac. Pero sa tinuod lang, daghan nang gisaad si Norman Black nga wala niya gituman,” pasabot ni Tallo.

“Bisan banga kaayo ang kontra, wala gihapon niya pasudla si MacMac. Okey ra man unta pero iya man nang giinsulto ang akong anak kay abi seguro taga Cebu, ing-anaon na lang.”

Ako ang opinion ha putting taga Cebu/Cebuano/probinsyano in the equation is very childish. Sa unang panahon ra siguro na oi karon wala naman siguro ingon ana nga mentality sa basketball.
