I agree..
Can you actually prove that these are caused by population? Or is it just bad governance and management? These are NOT the same.Originally Posted by yvemale
Actually, NONE of the things you have cited are caused by "overpopulation". Subsidized fishing (which causes overfishing) is a manifestation of greed, not overpopulation. Same with industrial pollution, which is caused when companies try to save on pollution controls (or cheat on them altogether) to maximize profit.
By the way, historically, food production has far outpaced population growth. So has the creation of new value. The world is NOT running out of any essential resource and will not in the foreseeable future. And the UN Population Division has already predicted that world population will stabilize at around 9 billion (or 12 if you take the high end) and will NEVER again double. yet production continues to go up.
More people also produce more goods and services. They create economic value. But the Philippine Total fertility rate (TFR) has been dropping like a rock. Population stagnation historically leads to economic hardship or even disaster.
It is also important to note that not a single one of the dire overpopulation predictions by doomsayers like Paul Ehrlich has ever come true. Not a single one. In contrast, on average people all over the world are better fed, better educated, and live longer than in past centuries. Overpopulation is a total myth.

i beg to disagree sir, overpopulation is one of the causes why there's starvation and famine all over.. we may be better fed and better educated than ever before but live longer?? maybe yes and maybe no... yes. because we have access to medicines that are scientifically formulated to prolong everybody's life... no, because not all medicines or foods today are beneficial to everyone's concern..Originally Posted by mannyamador
Overpopulation is never a myth.. it is humanity's erroneous way of propagating oneself.. minus the consequences of economic starvation...
Really? Please prove it. Show me where population growth -- and NOT anything else -- caused starvation on a national scale. It's easy to claim it, but without real evidence, it's just a claim.
Let me show evidence that proves OTHERWISE. A few years ago, this study came out: Antonio, Emilio T., et al. 2004. “’Too Many People’ Doesn’t Cause Poverty, Bad Governance and Policies Do”. University of Asia and the Pacific, Pasig City.
This study states:
Bad governance and bad economic policies, not a large, fast-growing population, are the real causes of poverty. More specifically, we have found that:
- Poverty remains unaffected or even decreases in a larger or increasing population. Population growth has little or no direct effect on per capita GDP growth. Thus, there is no basis for a policy that aims to reduce population growth to raise per capita GDP growth.
- Poverty is usually caused by poor governance and inappropriate and badly implemented economic policies — which leads to corruption, poor tax collections, lack of education and roads, lack of irrigation systems — instead of a large and increasing population.”
By the way, we DO live longer. Average life spabn now is around 65 years (higher in otgher countries). It was once as low as 40.
sir,
im not much into collecting datas to quantify the immense needs of restricting overpopulation.
No amount of anecdotal references on books can be compared if you try for once... to see, feel, visit or live in a densely overpopulated slum areas like tondo, bugnay or pasil...
It is easy to put a blame on the government, but the government can only do so much for it's people if only the majority of its population would also help themselves...
I do agree that technology has made us far more comfortable than we were before.. but it also opened up some deathly and often than not fatal diseases that were once not even heard of or seen before.... (some of it are in fact man made and cultured diseases)
Per se, going back on the real issue....
*** + human ignorance - consequences = Overpopulation
you said it all
its just about ignorance thats why we are overpopulated. Lami man ang *** basta kabalo lng ka unsa ang di pde buhaton ok ra hehehe
kay lisod jud magbuhi ug bata.
usa raman gani ako anak naglisod nko
self implement two child policy... ignore church rule... be responsible...
Then that means you have no basis for your claims. I, on the other hand, DO. So which one of has has a more credible claim?Originally Posted by joshbonz
Uh, what you are now presenting is anecdotal "evidence". You just contradicted yourself.Originally Posted by joshbonz
Let's look, at real evidence. Look at Hong Kong. It has a greater population density than any of those places you mentioned. Yet the people there are healthier, better fed, and wealthier than places with less population density like Africa. Obviously, "overpopulation" has nothing to do with poverty or their economic situation.
I got a better one:Originally Posted by joshbonz
IGNORANCE = overpopulation myth
And destroy society and the economy while doing it. Yeah, right.Originally Posted by nab_uang
