IMHO. The reason why the world is in dire state nowadays are peoples disfigured concepts of respect.

I believe it's understandable that people would act differently on the internet and in real life. People tend to be more outspoken on the internet since their comments are done indirectly (which is very appealing to most Filipinos, IMO). Comments like those should not be taken so seriously. Still, I believe the act remains indecent (at least in this case, to the RCs) whether it is on the internet or not and/or whether people made this much of an uproar or not.

The right thing to do, IMO, would've been to leave what is deemed sacred as sacred. Same thing goes for the outsiders who do not find that symbol to be sacred at all.

The fact that you're using a handle/pseudonym in iStorya.net means that you may be hiding the fact of your agnosticism from your family and friends, and while this is okay for some atheists and agnostics, the essence of both is the freedom to express what you really think.

Nope. I've been using this screen name for years now, and they can easily identify it to me. My family and friends know about my religious views, actually. We argue about religion all the time, especially during meals. I have plenty of friends that are agnostic, too. Although my family thinks it's "inappropriate" for a young lady to be agnostic but hey, what can they do? Nothing. They have no choice to listen to my "hopeless" questions.

Yes, I'm able to express my thoughts freely, but I have an obligation to these people as a member of the family. I can't just bail on them just because their activities do not correspond to my religious views. That would be insensitive of me, maybe disrespectful.

I guess there lies the difference between you and me. While I do maintain a good dose of contact or "relationship" with my family and relatives, I choose mainly a life of solitude for several years now, so that the people around (especially those related to me) me won't suffer any consequence of my ideas and outlook in life. This way, whatever I say or do, as an atheist, then will only affect ME and not those around me.

In your case, you seem to live a life that's has you quite close to your loved ones, and in that case I do admit it would be difficult for you to really wear a more flamboyant or headstrong attitude towards your opinions on religion and beliefs. In that aspect I respect your stance, but I still think that those who BELIEVE always USES that "friendly" or "mild" stance you have, as LEVERAGE to GET WHAT THEY WANT or HAVE THEIR WAY against nonbelievers, knowing that certain individuals who proclaim themselves atheist or agnostics still has STRONG TIES with relatives who are religious. I hope you grasp my point. If that leverage is not utilized then I don't have any qualms about respect, but this leverage does exist.

Point taken. It is difficult, but I am learning to maintain that balance by the virtue of respect. Like I said earlier, I would've envied the freedom you have right now, but I can't say I would be really happy with my life. I understand this leverage you are trying to point out and believe me when I say I've been in that situation many times already, but it is nothing more than intellectual exercise to me.

    Settling in for the night.
