I remember when I was a 4th grader back in 1997-1998, my dad used to take us to watch the old CAAA games. Panahon pa to nila Stephen Padilla, Ocanada, Dacia, Belano, etc sa UV, the atmosphere was almost the same as the current UAAP. Bisag ang HS games electric man sad ang crowd ato. I remember the old Don Bosco-San Carlos HS games, I wish someone had videotaped those games kay nindot kaayo to. Back when I was in college, the 2006-2007 USC vs UV Finals was also the same. In short, it's really not impossible for Cebu to achieve that kind of crowd. I can attest that we Cebuanos are more passionate basketball-lovers.
Ang naka-nindot lang diri Manila man gud kay it's not a chore to watch the games kay hayahay man ang venue, aircon. Sa Cebu Coliseum, once the game is over, expect to be just as sweaty as the players are when you come out. Naa pay mga pa-ugat kaayo nga mag-hukas ra, nya manigarilyo, samot. If only the rich patrons in Cebu decide to build a world-class arena, that might be the start of when Cebu basketball can finally compete with Manila in terms of support. Basig mao ra nay kuwang para ang mga maayo sa Vis-Min dili na mangadto sa Manila, and the result will be that Philippine basketball will be more well-rounded, and the crowd will be looking forward to seeing more of the games. Who knows, if some local network sees how Cebuanos love their basketball, they might even decide to televise the games and that will be the start of the renaissance of Cebu's hoops glory.
And of course, the Cebu schools themselves should also step up to the plate and improve their standards, from academics to athletics. The good players go to Manila schools because it's either the school is a proven basketball player-factory (think FEU, UE, etc) that has sent a lot of its players to the PBA, or because they want to get a quality education that will allow them to get good jobs in case their basketball careers don't pan out (think ADMU, UP, DLSU). If only Cebu education were as good, then the players wouldn't have to think twice to suit up for the hometown school. Sa Cebu, daghan gyud unta maayo manuwa pero ang training kay kuwang ra gyud kaayo, not enough to allow the player to take the next step (except for a chosen few, like Dondon. I'd include Ramon Fernandez but during his time lahi pa man kaayo to kay ang Cebu ug Manila almost equal pa man in terms of training, kinaraan pa puros LOL). The coaches should attend more trainings and seminars on how to improve their respective systems, similar to what the coaches here in Manila always do. Even established and accomplished PBA coaches like Chot Reyes and Jong Uichico still regularly attend those improvement seminars so that they can pick up a few more tricks here and there and become better at their craft. Sa Cebu man gud, ang mentality kay "Inarte ra man na, di man na kinahanglan."
It really sucks that Greg Slaughter was pirated by Ateneo, but I'm also glad that he ended up there. I want to see him blossom and live up to his true potential under Norman Black. The Slaughter we saw in Cebu should be different from the one we will see suiting up for Ateneo next year. Si Fajardo, if he were in Manila, would be a lot better. It's both scary and sad to think how great Fajardo could have been had he decided to try out in Manila. Nag-lisod gyud to ang UE niya in their PCCL game last year.
