they are better because of the friendship you shared for a long time...
gaining new friends is a good one too... who knows, they might also stay for a long time too...

It is a case to case basis. My best friends are old, old friends of mine...we go way back. But there are some old friends that I have "eliminated" from my life because they've changed and I just don't get along with them anymore.
