Iglesia, El Shaddai call for halt to bickering

    Friday, 10 21, 2005

Breaking their silence for the first time, the Iglesia ni Cristo and the El Shaddai yesterday appealed to both administration and opposition leaders to “end the political bickering that has been going on for months” for the good of the people.

In a signed joint statement, INC Executive Minister Eraño Manalo and El Shaddai Leader Mike Velarde said the increasing calls from both their members and non-members “compelled” them to convey the appeal.

The two religious leaders, in a statement said they had refrained from issuing statements on the current political situation in keeping with their policy of respecting the separation of Church and State but that the increasing calls of their flock and others, which majority belong to the lower bracket of the socio-economic strata, forced them to break their silence to convey an appeal to “all the leaders of both the administration and the opposition to put a stop to their political wrangling that has been going on for months and have been hurting our nation so much, particularly its economy.”

Manalo and Velarde said it was “high time” the administration and opposition leaders “set aside their political interests” and immediately attend to their “duty of alleviating the sufferings of the Filipino people, for which they were put into office.”

They called on both sides to consider the “undeniable reality” that many Filipinos now could not even provide themselves with the most basic of necessities.

The INC and the El Shaddai said there was still hope in resolving the issues being raised by both sides “through peaceful and constitutional means, if only they will offer to sacrifice a portion of what they believe is theirs to hold on to, for the sake of our suffering people.”

Manalo and Velarde expressed confidence that the nation's leaders still have the welfare of the people at heart. “May you not disappoint the expectations of your countrymen who look up to you for leadership especially in these economically trying times,” they added.

But Mrs. Arroyo, however, also yesterday, took the hard line stance, caused by alarm over the scheduled massive streets protests today at Mendiola, near Malacañang. Speaking through Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, she called on the protesters to follow the rule of law and avoid going to Mendiola, near Malacañang, stressing it is more than ready to implement again the calibrated preemptive response (CPR).

The CPR policy came about when Mrs. Arroyo, in a public forum announced that she was through with handing out the olive branch to her political detractors, critics and foes, all of whom she calls destabilizers and “thirsty power grabbers,” adding that henceforth the maximum tolerance policy was to be replaced by the CPR.

Members of the opposition, who asked not to be identified, told the Tribune yesterday that the appeal may not work, because there are “fundamental differences” between the administration and the opposition.

“With her gag order (EO464), what she (Mrs. Arroyo) is doing is to clip our power to investigate anomalies in government, and in her administration. She is too confrontational and wants to have her way everytime, and for us to bow to her wishes,” one said.

Another, a congressman, pointed out that “she insists that all the charges leveled against her during the impeachment be put to rest, but there can't be a closure on these issues of lying, stealing and cheating, because all they (Malacanang) have done is to cover up for the crimes, then she curbs all the rights of the people to seek redress of grievances, violently dispersing the rallyists—including bishops, priests and nuns.”

They stressed that Mrs. Arroyo and her aides have “become too arrogant for words,” and at every chance, even when there is no evidence at all, they quickly brand us as destabilizers and coup plotters, calling even legislative inquiries done in aid of destabilization. How can you set aside these issues when there is always a cover up on Malacanang's part. One more thing: They always blame the opposition for everything and even come up with fabricated charges.

She started the war, they pointed out, saying the “political bickering” comes from her, as they only respond to her charges.

Who will be left? There are so many to mention. I believe that there are still some government officials who are honest, dedicated in their service, decent, principled and uncorrupt.
