They can't take on the west. The west can't take on them. If that happens global trade will suffer. Saudi Arabia is nothing compared to Russia's oil/nat gas capacity to produce oil. Too bad the house of Saud is making things worse for their people.

Hmm... maybe we'll see this toy in action...

That source isn't very reliable. It was never legit and has always been full of right-wing bullsh*t.

AFAIK Russia has only condemned the notion of the West attacking the Syrians. It has never issued any sort of ultimatum or memorandum.

Russia's military is still sizable but it cannot hope to get in armed conflict with the U.S., even with Iran's help.

this **** escalated really quick because of news that there is involvement of chemical weapons in this civil war.

The US really has to respond. Obama drew his famous red line which has been since been jumped all over. Additionally the US is no longer feared the way that it was, not because it's capabilities have lessened, but rather as a consequence of softer foreign policy. Policy which has IMO significantly weakened America's standing in the world today. The White House will order a strike and I think it will be significant and it will be a message aimed not only at Assad.

I'm ignorant about this issue and I'm the first to admit it. What's the fuss about Syria? And what does the US, or any other country, have to do with Syria? Can you guys explain this whole thing pls? Preferably in a dumbed down manner that's easy to digest.

No, I don't want to google it.

Biden: 'No doubt' Syria unleashed chemical attack, must pay price - CNN.com

Saying "there is no doubt who is responsible for this heinous use of chemical weapons attack in Syria: the Syrian regime,"Vice President Joe Biden signaled Tuesday that the United States -- with its allies -- was ready to act.

French President Francois Hollande said his administration was "ready to punish those who made the decision to gas these innocent people," adding that "everything leads us to believe" that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces are responsible.

British Prime Minister David Cameron -- who talked Tuesday with U.S. President Barack Obama -- called lawmakers back from their summer vacations to consider a response to Syria, as the UK military prepares contingency plans.

And U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told the BBC on Tuesday that U.S. forces are "ready to go" if ordered to strike Syria by President Barack Obama.

Like it or not the US are the world police. Not because they particularly want to be, but because nobody else will take responsibility. Syria's leadership responded to the Arab Spring by killing the people who wanted change, the killing escalated into what has now become a civil war. The US has chastised Syria over it's handling of the situation and repeatedly called for talks between the government and the opposition. Action through the United Nations has been sabotaged by China and Russia who have been buying time for Assad to kill the opposition. It is important to remember that Russia has a strategic naval port in Syria and desperately wants to retain the status-quo.

Apart from humanitarian issues the US is concerned about Syria's chemical weapons falling into the hands of terrorist groups. These chemical weapons have been used in combat and their existence is now undeniable. Members of the Assad regime are technically now war criminals. The use of these weapons came after the US issued a clear warning about serious consequences. Obama must now use force to back up his words or lose credibility on the world stage.
