I personally have 2 dogs TS-- a mix breed (shih tzu - chihuahua) and a pure breed (shih tzu). I got the mix breed first then after 2 months got the pure breed... I treat them fairly although mas ni come out pa na mas-sweet and affectionate ang mixed breed. If i am sad and i cry, she would always lick on my tears and dry it out. If i am sick, both of them do not eat as well and would stay by my side on the bed...

So it does not matter gyud TS if mixed or pure. Although if you wish to join prestigious competitions or shows gyud,it has to be pure breed gyud. Pero if pet lang, it would not make a pure breed more of a pet than the mixed and vice versa.

If first timer ka TS, first things first know what you want, make a little research. And put in mind na a dog's behavior will depend on how it's owner trains him.

    Just my 2 cents TS

if you are looking for a companion just a mixed breed will do..if you want a specific look or what u see in the tv or magazines then maybe a pure breed dog will please you...no advantage or disadvantage, its about what you expect from your new buddy.

in my experience i got a mixed breed first and after a while i wanted a pure breed...

    purebred -
advantage - u know already unsay characteristics, size ug mga capabilties sa dog..
disadvantage - naa siyay ma inherit na mga sakit from their bloodlines / breed. nya ingon sila mas taas ug life span basta mix breed kaysa purebred.

    mix breed -
advantage - kay naa kay unique nga breed sa dogs. unique means lahi ra ug face, porma, quality, characteristics, maybe a combi of color kaysa sa uban..based on the offsprings ( dam and sire ). ingon sila mo live ug longer daw kay ang immunity sa 2 ka breeds nag-combine..
dis - u dont know unsay gidak-on sa imong dog, characteristics once he/she become adult,

for me, it doesnt matter kung mix or pure imo pet as long as ang imung duty ug responsibility being a dog owner naa always..kay they are animals sad..

Leilane: finding a dog is like finding a real-life partner. It will just come and you'll know it. Firstly, determine why you want to have a pet. How big is your home? who will take care of it? how busy is your lifestyle? how much attention can you give your dog? If you live alone or live with someone, be prepared since owning a dog is going to change your life. It will definitely change your lifestyle unless you don't really plan to raise her/him yourself.

The advantage of a purebreed is that - there are plenty of info that you can read about that particular breed. The disadvantage, most purebreeds have genetic health problems.

The advantage of mixed breeds , for some reason, the genetic health problems disappears (although not always true) depending on the mix. Nobody really knows how it happens since the breeding is usually accidental so it's hard to say why most mixed breeds are healthier.

I met my very first dog (i'm a dog owner for only 1 year and 8 months - June 2011). That's the age of my eldest dog (minus the 1st three weeks) and she happens to be a mixed breed. Like you, I had been searching for a dog I could buy and my urge began after I came back from New York where I've learned that dogs in the US are actually treated like family. My brother in law and cousins are dog lovers but it wasn't until I made a super scary eye contact with my cousin's growling Labrador after I shooed him (for smelling me while I was waking up) that I developed a new found respect for this particular specie. I thought he was going to eat me and my heart was beating really fast and I just held my breath, and worked on my breathing - then for some reason, the lab just relaxed and laid his head on my lap. It was an incredible experience.

Since that time, I had been thinking of getting a dog and my cousin suggested a poodle since I am allergic to dust, pollens and all those stuff. so in my mind, Poodle was on the top of my list but I couldn't find any in Cebu at that time. Then one time, the husband of one of our staff (first time breeder) brought three of his pups to the office and sold it to one of our engineers (40 something). I was fascinated to see that other side of her - she was literally jumping up and down playing with the pup. She then asked me if I wanted to buy the other pups since there's two more. In passing, I just said, sure go ahead. I had a meeting in my office with a graphic designer and when they came in with two more puppies, I made eye contact with one of them, which happens to be my dog now. Though she looked so frail and weak, I couldn't take my eyes off her (the other dog looked exactly like her but I've established a direct connection already and it was unbreakable). I literally excused myself from my meeting and just took the puppy in my arms. I don't recall paying for the pup (but our office secretary took care of it of course)- I just took her and went straight to my next door vet (Dog & Cat Clinic), bought dog food, went to True Value, Ayala and bought everything (dog bed, bowl, leash, pillow, etc). I just fed her bear brand on the first 2 weeks since she was too young to start with dog food. I was at first told it was a Poodle but she looked like a terrier. There was a time when my brother was teasing me that she's an ASPIN and that all puppies look special but turns into a "bisaya" dog as it grows. I have to admit, I felt a little disappointed with my pup at that time- I had a lot of attachment of wanting a purebreed for a first dog but it's like my pup could understand what I'm feeling and as I look into her eyes, I could feel her reaching out to me and was really hoping I would keep her. I decided, I don't care. I'm going to love her whether she's a mixbreed or not. And guess what? She's the best. I own 10 purebreeds+1 more mixedbreed now (long story how it grew from just one to 12 dogs) but she's my alpha. She's so amazing. She has so much character than my purebreeds and so unpredictable yet I could very well get her temperament. I have bite marks all over my hands, arms, legs, you name it but I literally didn't care and now, I get nipped here and there and it really doesn't matter to me anymore. I have to say, my life has changed and I think it's for the better too. I'm a workaholic, still am but my dogs just calms me down and takes away all the stress every time I come home. I mean it's not easy taking care of a dog but it has its own rewards. It's good practice if you wish to raise a family someday. I'd even argue it's easier to take care or nurse a baby than raise a pup. The key to finding a good dog for you is knowing and understanding why you want a dog. When you fully understand the underlying reason behind the need to own one, you just have to feel it. when the pup finds you (and I'm saying it will), you'll know it.
