Woah! Hinay2x lang pre. Kay The Tree of Life may not be for all tastes but a waste of time it's definitely not! Not only Malick fans should go see it but lovers of art cinema. The cinematography, score, acting, editing, directing were all astonishing and top notch.
It plays out like stream-of-consciousness plot a-la Tarkovsky's The Mirror so it was presented like fragments of a memory (well this is for the latter part, at least, because the beginning is from the POV of grieving parents). Length-wise I think it's also perfect. There's a reason why the universe creation and the dinosaur age took only 20 minutes compared to 2 hours of recollection of only a childhood past. Plus if you connect the end of the film with the beginning you have a continuous loop.
So I wouldn't expect everyone to appreciate this but it's definitely not to be avoided. I think it's his most ambitious and most accomplished work thus far.
I haven't seen Hugo but it's going to be shown in Phils. in Feb 15 and I'll wait for it.
Regarding the Oscar nominations, I haven't seen 2 of the Best Picture nominees, Hugo and "Incredibly Loud." I'm not a huge fan of Daldry films so I'm not excited to seek out Incredibly Loud since I also read reviews nga it's very melodramatic (which is not a surprise for Daldry).
The Academy Awards is more like a political or popularity contest so of the 9 BP nominees the 2 that have put up the most massive campaigns are THE ARTIST and THE DESCENDANTS making them front-runners.
Unfortunately, these are NOT great movies. Any hardcore lovers of silent cinema can attest to this about The Artist. The Descendants is also too thin and somewhat shallow than expected.
ACTOR: Is a tight fight between Dujardin and Clooney (poor Oldman who did a magnificent job in "Tinker" lels...IMO among the nominees he did the most subtle and amazing portrayal. He does every time). The Oscars love young blood and will probably give it to Dujardin.
ACTRESS: Is a 3-way fight among Streep, Davis, and Williams. All nominated before (they have a thing about this) but will end up a close fight between Streep & Williams. While they love young bloods, Streep has also not won in ages.
Sup ACTOR: Plummer.
Sup ACTRESS: Spencer.
DIRECTING: Whoever wins Best Picture usually wins Best Director. But this time there's a competition in Scorsese.
In the last ten years, no other best picture nominee has received worse reviews than Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
I would have loved Melancholia or, hell, even Bridesmaids up there than Extremely Loud. For such a sappy, emotionally exploitative movie, that kid was so unendearing. His over enunciation of every.word.he.speaks drove me nuts. None of the nominees for best picture this year were great. not a single one. And as far as The Artist goes, I don't think it was made for "hardcore lovers of silent cinema". I think it was made for the general viewing audience. Not a thinking mans movie but It's crowd-pleasing, charming and witty enough to win many people over (including the critics) and certainly trumps the other movies. I hope it wins, comedies very rarely get nominated let alone win and it's time for the comedies to get some respect.
Your opinion and you're entitled to that. But I think there are at least 2 great films in the nominees. Besides The Tree of Life I think Midnight in Paris is a great movie and it's greatest strength lies in its screenplay in how it plays out so mild and thin yet when you listen or read the script it has tremendous layers most especially on the idea of one's concept of a L'Age d'Or.
You see, in an era of digital technology, crisp, rich, vibrant colours and state-of-the-art sound mixing and effects I doubt that there are many who will want to watch a black and white movie these days, much less a silent film (including those who would call themselves hardcore film lovers). So I agree to disagree that The Artist was not really made for black and white and silent film enthusiasts, only it fails in comparison with the actual greats of the b&w or silent era created by filmmakers such as: Vidor, Ozu, Sjostrom, von Stroheim, Lang, Murnau, Chaplin, Dreyer, Keaton, Eisenstein, etc.
..i was hoping for jane eyre to be nominated..
