First, do you actually know what science is? I ask this question kay kini man ang maka-determine if ang pag tuo nimo kay Michio Kaku kay "blind" ra (i.e. nadala ra ka sa istayl sa iyang pag istorya)or nakasabot jud ka sa iyang gipangsulti. Science is a system, a means or method to find out of something is true or not. And thus, if you listen to a person telling you something, regardless if scientist siya or dili, if ang iyang gipangsulti ga uyon sa SCIENTIFIC METHOD, then of course, there is very little reason to doubt nga dili tinood iyang gipangsulti.

I don't see any reason why this is placed under science forum.
Just because the speaker is a scientist doesn't mean the topic is about science.

Obviously, this is a sci-fi stuff.

What difference does it make when we talk about allsparks or mind over metal powers?

RedHorse, you among most iStoryans here can't even tell the difference between science and pseudoscience even if one was colored red and the other was colored blue, even if it was placed under your nose, so you have absolutely no basis for claiming that Michio Kaku's theories are under "sci-fi". Perhaps one reason why you're somewhat disgruntled by the fact that it was moved here, is because you know that if you start injecting wild, preposterous ideas in the thread (which would have been okay if this remained in the General Discussion Section), you'd then receive an infraction for not sticking to the tenets of science while in the science section of iStorya.net. And yes, we will never hesistate from doing so once you gallop in that direction.

What difference does it make? I'll tell you what difference it makes.

Among the many times I've been with an astronomy group, visiting some local elementary or high school, there's always that moment when the kids come up to you asking questions which clearly indicate how the twisted arms of "popular entertainment" have distorted their views, thereby letting them have difficulty in understanding scientific principles. Mga bright unta nga mga bata, pero due to the fact nga na-bombard by the pathetic influence of popular culture and people who think like you do, then it now takes double the effort to let these kids realize why things work the way they do.

And that's the difference it makes. As an amateur astronomer and science advocate, it is my task to set the record straight, so that these kids won't grow up to be ignorant and apathetic like most of the lost youth nowadays.

^^ Ok, apologies for using "sci-fi" term. But, isn't it that type n civilizations are somewhat speculative/imaginative, and way beyond the scope of science?

I, for one believe that there must be another life-form outside our planet.

But how could the speaker theorizes about "immortal" beings? or aliens who can control the output of the sun?

You have a very good point there redhorse. There was a time before nga nag duha-duha dyud ko if i-allow ba nako ang ideas like Kaku's to be posted as topics of discussion here in the Science section, due to the speculative nature of his ideas and other similar ideas.

Speculative ideas are in fact allowed here, if they are grounded and follow the basic principles of the scientific method, and are not just mere fantastical claims. Here's a rough analogy:

Two people say, "Tomorrow, there's a good chance I'll receive a bonus at work." One person is a hard worker, very loyal to his job, and he's been pouring out extra effort recently at work. The other, is a person who's often absent, disrespects his superiors, and often gets reprimanded by the poor quality of his work. Now, in your opinion, who is thinking in realistic terms? The first person's prediction is a grounded prediction, in that he has grounds for anticipating his bonus. The other person though, has absolutely no grounds (unless he's sleeping with his boss or something).

Its the same with scientific ideas and theory--you cannot just jump into some lofty, futuristic idea without a solid grasp and grounding in the present time. Michio Kaku's ideas while lofty and esoteric, are well-grounded and are based on trends currently being observed in human society, and the tempo and pace of the development of science and technology in human civilization.

Daghan man ang ga awat ni Kaku, Sagan, etc, pero if their views are not well-grounded, wala'y unod or wala'y substance ang ilang gina pang sulti, and thus it will lead to what you said earlier, nga yes, sometimes some of these unqualified people, pataka ra ug sulti when in fact what they're saying is more science fiction rather than science fact.

Just think--if we were in the year 1098 B.C. and we were walking along a country road, and met a man who claimed he was from the year 2011 AD, a time when people talked a long distance to other people using handheld contraptions, who use a world-wide system of connected information machines (called the internet), who rode vehicles that could fly across the sky, a time when human beings can create glow-in-the-dark dogs, and even "create" meat on a petri-dish...wouldn't we both think we encountered a crazy man?

Based on our knowledge of the human body, we are only limited by what technology can give us at the moment--i.e. given sufficient amount of technology, practical immortality is attainable. And harnessing the power of a star is a no-brainer--all you need is lots of time and materials, and you can effectively build something big--if you have seen those artificial islands in Dubai, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It's all about scale, effort and the limits of the technology available at the time.

^^ Ok, I hope somebody can post here some excerpts from Kaku's theories as to why he was able to theorize such alien types.

Who knows, we could have been the most advance lifeform in this Universe, and we will be the one's to propagate this big space and dominate the newly sprouted civilization..

Hmm.. its not true yet that in a sense, it is the way of Mr. K to embed that thought to a layman's point of view.
