The Singaporean Keso
Singapore opens up
For the past three years, Singapore has been a favorite destination for “OFW wannabes” in the south east. This is after Singapore hit its lowest total fertility rate of 1.28 children per woman, the 3rd lowest in the world and well below the 2.10 needed to replace the population. To keep its man power from an apparent declination, Singapore has made policies to encourage foreigners to migrate and work in the country.
Singapore is the best option
Singapore’s population is the sixth-highest percentage of foreigners globally, where its number almost equals to its citizens. This has made the country very friendly to visitors. Religion, cultural and racial discrimination is zero due to its very diverse population and immigrant background. While Buddhism is a dominant religion, Muslims and Christians have high respect to each other, which by the way makes equal in terms of numbers.
Accessibility
With a distance of less than 1500 miles from the homeland, Singapore’s Changi Airport connects direct to three major ports of call in the Philippines; Clark in Pampanga, NAIA in Manila and Mactan in Cebu. With a flight distance of 2,384 Kilometres; one can be from point to point in less than four hours which allows OFWs to fly home every long weekend and public holidays.
Cheapest Flights
The airline competition and Singapore’s campaign to attract visitors from all over the region has made the air fares very affordable. Tiger Airline, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines offers the most affordable ride to the Lion City. With regular round trip fares ranges from 5K to 15K PHP, these airlines also offers promotional seats that can go down to 888 pesos on round trip fares, before taxes.
Cost of living
Like all first class city in the world Singapore cost of leaving is a little expensive. However, you can still enjoy healthy, delicious food and a descent accommodation while tightening your day to day budget. Renting a bed space for jobseekers is the best option. For a monthly rent of 250 to 300 SGD a month (depends on the location), bed space or rooms sharing does not only suits your budget but also lets you make friends. The food is very accessible; all neighbourhoods in Singapore have hawkers (their version of Pinoy Carenderia). Kopitiams or Coffee shops are actually food courts situated on almost all community or town centres and some are open 24 hrs. For a value meal, you can have a cup of rice, pork or chicken with veggies, not so bad for 2 dollar repast.
Insertion
Now that you are convinced, let us talk about how you can get here. There are two ways to get your cheese here in Singapore. You can either play it the conventional way or play it straight and strong. You can seek help from employment agencies based in the Philippines, which normally charge extremely high on placement and processing passes or you can go a little daring by getting in as tourist, and play it hard. I personally suggest the second one, of course.
The Preparations
I went in as a tourist, so I am not so familiar on how to go with local employment agencies; however, one thing is certain, the charges are high and your options are limited. On the other hand, getting in as tourist maybe your best option, you will have full control of your mission and the rewards are far greater. While some would not prefer doing it because it’s too risky, which very true, but with “out-and-out” planning the try is worth the risk.
Here are things I suggest you consider before laying out your plan:
Job Market. Check out your chances. Consult the job market by logging in to the following sites; Monster (www.monster.sg), Job street (Jobs in Singapore. Advance your career with thousands of job vacancies - JobStreet.com), JobsDB (Singapore Jobs : Jobs in Singapore & Singapore Job | JobsDB Singapore), ST701 (Singapore Jobs, Property, Cars and Classifieds - ST701.com) and PinoySG (PinoySG.com - The Filipino Portal in Singapore - Home). These are the most famous job seeker sites available online. You will have better chances of landing on a job if your target position is posted by at least by 20 companies in any given day.
Time and Budget. Time is the most important element you need to consider once you get in. A tourist is only given 30 days of stay upon embarkation. In other words, once you get off behind the yellow line of the airport immigration counter, the clock starts ticking and you only have that long to get into your cheese. Although, you can get an extension when it expires, or take the “Get out, get in” maneuver. I suggest you stick to a 30-day plan, so as to manage your resources well. With the current exchange rate, a 30-day job hunt in Singapore may cost PHP 80K, conservative budget (excluding air fare).
Documents. Make sure all your documents are at hand. Certificate of Employments, Transcript of Records, Diploma, Training Certificates, and softcopies of Curriculum Vitae. These documents are not only needed by employers but are requirements to process your Employment Pass.
Network of friends. Make contacts of friends or relatives you know in Singapore. One of the safest way of going in as a tourist is to ask friends or relatives to invite you to come over. Invitations are processed through the Philippine embassy and sent to you via courier. Invitation is not really necessary but in many occasions will be asked by Immigration Officers upon entry. Moreover, remember that you are all alone on this mission and so your circle of friends will only be your life lines once you are in.
Accommodation. Ask a friend to reserve a bed space for you. Bed spaces for rent are posted in PinoySG.com - The Filipino Portal in Singapore - Home, however if you have friends that can share a room with you, or help you find cheaper deals, that would save you a lot of money.
Computer. All job applications in Singapore is done online, except for Jobs fairs, so not to have a laptop is a like going to a battle in the dark without night vision goggles. Applications and notifications are mostly done on the internet, not to mention Employment Visa applications and employment websites that you will need to check from time to time. You need not to worry about internet connections; in Singapore most bed spacer rentals includes Wi-Fi internet access
The Hunt
My first attempt to get in as tourist was one hell of an experience. I got “A to A”, or the “not so rude” of saying “refused entry”. That was not cool. I was sent back to the Philippines because I didn’t have complete documents. I was very frustrated and devastated. So when I came back, I was not even worried of finding job, I was worried if they going to kick me out again. However, I was able to make it behind the yellow line, and I was like very happy that I almost forgot that I still have to get into my main objective. Hunt the cheese!
De rigueur
Just like any hunting mission, the hunter should be geared up and prepared to take on any impediment that comes his way in the wild. Here are the basic things that you need.
Singapore phone line. Singtel Hi Card SIM is a personal favourite because they offer cheaper calls to the Philippines, but other choices such as Starhub and M1 SIMs are also popular. Whichever you prefer is up to you, but you got to have a phone line right away so you can start sending out applications. I did not include printing your resumềs as part of the preparations I mentioned earlier, since you still have to update them once your Singapore phone number is up.
EZ Link Card. Singapore has one of the most efficient and convenient means of public transport in the whole of Asia and to enjoy it you need the EZ Link Card. These cash reloadable cards are use to pay fares for public buses, train (MRT) and selected taxis in the city. This is your ticket to going around the maze.
Hardcopies of resumềs. This will come handy especially on immediate personal interview invitations. I suggest you always carry at least two copies of it wherever you go.
Recon
Singapore is relatively a small country, but a big city. On my first day in Singapore I didn’t put so much time on sending out resumềs. I was more anxious to get out and see what’s there. So after sending a number of applications early in the morning, I went out with a roommate who has been in the city for a month. After teaching me how to get a point to point direction online, he gave me a practical crash course on how to get around via bus and MRT. That was the only day that I felt like a tourist, but for me it was a very important first step to start the hunt. Familiarize the maze.
I personally suggest you do the same thing on your first week. Go around, chill, and relax! After all, you are a tourist, and that’s what tourists do. Experience the city, go to famous landmarks; Merlion, Sentosa, Marina Bay, Orchard malls and the famous “little Philippines in Singapore” the Lucky Plaza. Okay, the last one is not actually famous landmark, but the best place to go when you feel homesick. Moreover, you can visit these places without spending a centavo, well except of course for the fares.
Burst fire
Singapore offers a lot of job opportunities for foreigners, while it sounds so reassuring do not forget that you have competitors. Our friendly Indian counterparts whose skill sets are as competitive as ours are also on the hunt for the same types of cheese, not to mention the thousands of Filipinos like you who got convinced with this blog and are now on the pursuit as you do. Well, the last one did not sound so convincing, but let’s just assume. In any case, do not be overconfident, always in a burst fire. Ideally, at least 20 resumềs submission a day is what you need to do, but If you can go for more, so much the better, as the advertisement goes, and I quote, “the more entries you send, the more chances of winning”.
While you aim for those jobs that are similar to your most recent one, consider other options as well. Like for myself, my last employment in the back home was in Technical Support (Call Centre), but I was also a College IT Instructor before; thus, while I aimed for helpdesk/service desk support positions, I was also sending resumềs for teaching positions. The good thing about online resumề submission is that they don’t cost anything. Therefore, create two or more versions of your resumề and send it out like you're throwing confetti, and always remember, “The more entries you send, the more chances of winning”.
Strike out
Shoot anything that moves as the famous general said. With a 30-day visit approval you do not have the luxury to choose your prey. Well, at least for the mean time. Some, if the not the most common reason of failing to get job while in tourist visa, is pride. There was one somebody I knew that got his first job offer when he was just in his 4th day. He was very lucky, I thought, but this somebody was a class “A”yuppy in the Philippines, he was earning 50K a month back home, he claims. The offer was not that good, the pay was only at the minimum range and he said that job is not in his preferences, and so he turned it down. He was hopeful that he could get a better deal than that. Well, as all sad stories end, he end up nothing and was forced to go home with nothing.
Get a job in 30 days, that’s your mission. It doesn’t matter what job it is, because what matters is the PASS, the EMPLOYMENT PASS or the green card. Employment pass or E-Pass, as it commonly called, is a multiple entry visa, issue to you by the Singapore government once you have an employer. An E-pass or S-pass holder is allowed to stay in Singapore for one year, and may be renewed by their employer before expiration. Once you have the pass; you will have more options, and a longer time to decide which suits your job preferences. So while on the hunt, shoot everything that moves, do not waste any prey, because even the smallest ones can buy you more time to continue hunting.
Stop not
Getting a job offer is just half the battle won. Another challenge is getting your pass approved. Employment passes are processed by your employers and are subject to approval by the Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower. This government agency is tasked to make sure that foreign work force meets the standards of the country. Once your E-Pass application is submitted together with your documents and credentials, you do not have any control of it anymore nor your employer. You are at the agency’s mercy and all you can do it is wait for their verdict which normally gets back to you after a week.
Even after signing up on a job offer, do not stop sending out resumềs. Expect for the best, but prepare for the worst. Don’t waste a week hoping and waiting. Remember, no pass equals to no job. A roommate and very close friend of mine got a taste of the stringent MOM approval process, two employers for two different job offers, failed to get him an employment pass. Yours truly, was also denied approval once. I did not mean scare you, but that’s just how it is. However, if you stay focus on the mission and if you are determined, nothing is impossible.

Before I end this blog, I am going to reveal 2 things. No.1 - 80K pesos is not really a conservative budget for a month. Your 80K can go beyond a month. and No. 2 – most jobseekers do not always gets the job in 30 days.
I got to sign a job offer after the 5th day of my stay; however my employment pass was approved only after 28 days from the contract signing, then finally, I started working on my 41st day in Singapore. Remember that you don’t get your first salary on your first day of work, and so you have to have back up funds. In fact, if you can bring more than 80K, it would be a lot safer. Another thing is that, what if you still don’t have a probable employer and your visit pass is running out. In most cases, an extension is applied a week prior from its expiration. A visit pass extension is applied online, and if approved will extend your stay for another 30 days upon approval. This is when your back fund will come handy and you can start drawing plan "B", but of course it’s going to cost more money. Therefore, even if you have the funds, stick to the plan of getting it done in 30 days, as the saying goes.. "Aim small, miss small".
While others still think it’s a crazy idea to get in the maze via a Tourist Visa because it’s too risky, I would say, I would rather take the shot. Get in and play it strong. Getting into a hot water; always makes you clean. Good luck and I hope to see around.
