For me, I classify the components if Branded or Generic by 3 things..

1. "Appearance"
2. "Performance"
3. Most important is "Durability"

If you're part of a distribution company or a comp technician you will understand me

Note: What I mean is branded by components not by the whole packaging...
And a Generic System Unit that cost 15k in the mall actually a complete Branded system unit from the outside.

"branded" can also fail...my other rig with generic psu has been running fine since 2004...

afaik,

branded desktops = Dell, Acer, Alienware
generic( though I think this not a good term for it ) desktops/cloned desktops = personalized build
