There are many fields in medical transcription in the US. Like, the US hospitals can't keep up the accounting work for billing insurance companies so here, in the US, many filipinos work as medical billing agents. They're the ones who do the computation for the hospitals and bill them to the insurance companies. They're in charge of processing insurance claims, etc. It's a stay-at-home job. But there are many fields pa.

2 1/2 years ago I worked for an Australian company who had a branch there in Cebu, we do medical transcription, interviews, legal transcription, and mind you employees were just trained. Myself I wasn't a medical course graduate, compsci ko, then there was this pol scie graduate, then rad tech. Tulo ra mi ka employees and a manager in a small office in Mandaue.
How the business works.
Transcription truly is a little hard especially among customers were Australian doctors, naay uban ga conduct ug surveys, we basically accept any that needs transcription.
Medical Transcription
Mostly doctors who do complete physical assessments for all employees in a certain company. There, they have complete check-up, from stress tests, to everything... inig balik sa pasiente sa doctor's office, the doctor don't need to talk to them instead the secretary hands them a document about all the results and assessment. If they have questions, then they talk to the doctor. This process basically saves the doctors time kaysa magsige siya discuss kada pasyente.
He uses a certain recorder and records while he is assessing the results, he then connects that hardware to his computer and thus making a sound file, it was a long time ago so kalimut na gyud ko sa details sa softwares. But you can search for these hardwares, voice recording, transcription hardware and software or tools.
So... the doctor sends the sound file, and we here in Cebu uses a software that has a foot pedal, to start and stop the recording, listens to it with headphones, then types it on the computer. Everytime you step on the pedal, mo balik siya in a predefined time, like 5 seconds. Mind you guys, mate mate kaayo, lisud kaayo considering Australian accent, galisud gyud mi at first. But naanad ra mi and we did fine. We had a database of diseases, drugs, tanan medical. We basically search "sounds like", gamit gyud utok and dunggan, labi na magkayungit ning mga Australians. Most cases bati kaayo ang quality sa recording, we downloaded a free software para i-edit and limpyo sa recording. Payts man sad. Dili gyud 100% among result, but our boss/owner in Australia siya ang mag QC, and re-reads, then ma perfect nila with his wife. It's a small company pero daghan customers. Labi na ang amo website #1 in keywords sa google and yahoo, payts kaayo. Thanks to me. Hehe. Am good.

Transcription is a no joke business. I mean if you plan to work at home, diri sa US tungod sa competition, they have to finish transcription courses para daghan magpa transcribe nila. I say practice lang, apply for a foreign company who outsources their transcription jobs, buy the software and be sure naa kay computer sa balay and internet connection, get a database source for whatever field you are transcribing, then start listening and typing.
