while kirk hammet and kurt cobain in the top 20's and they also include the axeman of creed, he can play but he's not that good.

van halen is 10 times better than hendrix. the right selection was jimi page(no. 3) and jeff beck I forgot but he's in the top 10. I dont really disagree with beck and page coz they deserve the spot. They even include jery garcia of the grateful dead another hippie. I think they should add britney spears to complete the lists.

I just thought the rest of the list was a total crap.

Van Halen is 10 times better than Hendrix? Really?

Hendrix is THE MOST INFLUENTIAL GUITARIST of the 20th Century. He got that distinction not by how many notes per second he could play. He got that distinction because he changed how the guitar and music ingeneral was perceived and used.

To this day, I hear Hendrix's influence in artists as diverse as Sting and U2, to Prince and Nigel Kennedy. And I'm not talking about GUITAR SOLOS, which I suppose is YOUR gauge for how good a guitarist is. I'm talking about the whole thing - arrangements, tone, effects, recording techniques, etc.

Don't consider this list of guitarists like the way you consider the TOP 10 of Tennis. This is not an athletic competition.

Think of this in the same way that people consider Marlon Brando the greatest actor of the 20th century - his work changed the artform itself.
its not about how innovative a guitar player to be great, its all about the complexity of your composition, hey kurt cobain changes the style of guitar playing, but he also admitted that he's not a good musician. and so does edge of u2 that they say they are more than friends than musicians.
being great is not about how popular you really are.

yeah jimi hendrix is influencial, but just like in basketball julius erving started those high flying moves then came michael jordan who surpasses his skills, same here with edward van halen, he's the michael jordan when comes to guitar, coz he surpasses jimi in everyway that even jimi page once admit that he went to see van halen in concert just to copy some of his style, imagine that even steve vai also said the same thing. I've seen a lot of guitar virtousos, from paul guilbert, petrucci, vai, satriani, malmsteen, dimebag and many more and most of their style is pretty similar to van halen. for short jimi started it all but edward enhances it by taking it to another level. that even if you ask edgar anciano a very respected axemen here in cebu that its very hard to play eddie's style. he's a master in legato, vibrato, picking, harmonics, whammy bar, and of course the guitar tapping which is the most copied style in the 80's. see him in play live in "right here right now" concert the track is 316. if you're not blown away with that then try listening his eruption, you'll see how good he really is. I have a friend who's really good in guitar I think he's better than kirk hammet, yes he's really good and he says that of all the guitar god's he find it difficult to play eddie van halen, dimebag darrel and richie sambora's licks.

take note: jimmy page was a master in the studio that he can play his guitar in different tuning, and i think was more influencial and artistic than jimi hendrix but he praises edward. whom shall I believe you or jimmy page. I'd rather believe to one of the greatest guitar hero of all time

I wouldn't say Eddie Van Halen is the Michael Jordan of guitars... but people are entitled to their own opinions. If you think Eddie Van Halen is number 1.. then cool... I pick JOHNNY MARR.. but then, that's just me. Nobody would agree with me anyways .

Yes, these two guys are the ones I would like to emulate aside from my futile attempts at Pat Metheny licks. I'm also dipping my fingers into the chord voicings of not so familiar Brazilian dudes Joao Bosco and Djavan! Cheers!

I have to add one more comment and then I'll shut up. One of the ONLY cool things about being the oldest guitarist in this forum (I'm 52), is that I was playing guitar in the 1960's. Most of you guys weren't even born until the 80's I bet. You've ALWAYS had the modern technique guitarists to listen to. Super high gain amps, incredible effects processing, Floyd Rose trems, skinny neck guitars (w/ jumbo frets and .009 gauge strings) and music videos on MTV. It's impossible for me to say anything more than how exciting it was for me to see Jimi Hendrix in concert and be so blown away by what he was doing with a guitar. Hypnotic vibrato, screaming Marshall stacks and a horribly out of tune Stratocaster. It didn't matter, because it was NEW and DANGEROUS guitar playing. Listen to "Foxey Lady"...Greatest technique? Nope. Really cool? Yep. ANYBODY else sound like that at that time? Nope. Was he from the planet Earth? Maybe not...

DON'T LECTURE ME ON HOW TECHNICALLY GIFTED VAN HALEN IS.

    I KNOW

I am referring to the list that Rolling Stone made. The list that Rolling Stone made is NOT ABOUT TECHNICAL SKILL. Rolling Stone reviews music all the time and NEVER is it about technical skill.

The list is based on how much they affected others PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

    VAN HALEN influenced GUITAR PLAYING.

    HENDRIX INFLUENCED MUSIC PERIOD.

And again, IF ALL YOU'RE BASING YOUR BRILLIANT ANALYSIS ON IS TECHNICAL SKILL, THEN THE LIST WOULD ONLY HAVE JAZZ AND FLAMENCO MUSICIANS.

If I had to vote for which guitarist "looks like he's having the most fun on stage".. I guess it would be Eddie Van Halen. Or in the category, "first guy to play a guitar slung so low that his right arm was fully extended".. It would be Jimmy Page. In the "fewest licks, but they sounded so good that Stevie Ray used them and got his foot in the door" category...Albert King.

Ahhh. So many great players. So many contributions to music and its evolution.

Rolling Stone should have just listed the guys in alphabetical order...

Vince, we're the same age... I can't imagine what it was like watching the Jimi Hendrix live, you're one lucky dude! Back in 1970 long before MTVs, I had to watch the Woodstock documentary hundreds of times at the old UltraVistarama and I never seem to get enough of Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana - my first guitar heroes of the psychedelic era.

I agree with you vince, van halen makes his guitar playing look easy even if it aint, and jimi page his les paul hanging down on his knees.

here's the crap list maybe you're wondering what i'm talking about. can you believe that kurt cobain is better than angus young or tony iommi. even steve morse wasn't even in the list while he was voted by the guitar player magazine as the best guitarists for five straight years. guitar player mag is not just about rock music it features all kinds of music genre. I bet kirk hammet would be celebrating now that he's better than randy rhodes, vai, satriani, mick mars.
