Attack delays Engaņo polls

A SHOOTOUT some two hours past midnight scared teachers who were assigned to run the precincts and delayed the elections in Punta Engaņo, Lapu-Lapu City for more than three hours yesterday.
It also ended the life of a driver of a candidate for barangay captain. Demetrio Sumalpong Jr., 22, was about to get married next month.
Three others were injured, two of them said to be former members of the Army’s Scout Rangers regiment.
Cebu Provincial Police Director Erson Digal confirmed two other “isolated” shooting incidents in San Remigio, a northern town some 109 kilometers from Cebu City.
But he and Commission on Elections (Comelec) officials agreed the barangay and youth elections were “generally peaceful” in Cebu’s nine cities and 44 towns.
In a briefing, Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Ager Ontog Jr. said he ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7 to help the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office in investigating the shootout in Barangay Punta Engaņo. Some large resorts, for which Lapu-Lapu is famous, are located there.
