I have seen Lino Brocka's Aunor starrer, Bona and the coming of age film, Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang.
His movies realistically and artistically depict our cultural heritage, our somehow irrational beliefs and traditions, and our ailing country.
I was awestruck in Bona.
Brocka didn't use any background music to heighten the emotions of Nora Aunor, an ardent fan and Phillip Salvador, the strugging movie bit player, but the scenes were palpable, very well felt by the viewer. The squatter environment where Aunor and Salvador settled served as a perfect backdrop for the unhealthy hero-worshipping of the dakilang-alalay to the egoistic/chauvinistic C-actor and symbolically represents our decaying society.
Sadly, today, we rarely encounter such socially-oriented films...
