for those who would want to visit and pay their respects, their wake is at rolling hills. i don't know if naa pa ba until now. i haven't been there yet.

the squatters are quite a few houses away from where the tragedy happened.

the creek is quite small to accomodate all of the rainwater that poured that night. nag overflow ang water sa bridge, niabot na sa road. the road was impassable.

the victims have been tenants of the said house for almost a year now.

sad to say, we live at the topmost floor of the said house. everything happened at the wee hours of the night when everybody was already in peaceful slumber.

I've heard about this story a few months back: "city will be implementing a massive clearing of rivers and creeks". they visited areas near riverbanks from I guess Guadalupe to where the river ends. I've read about city workers checking areas near Pasil specially those shanties near rivers and creeks. they came up with a program to clear those areas of garbage and have squatters relocated to safer areas. I hope the city government would find a way to implement it's program as quickly as possible and not wait for incidents like these from happening.

in my opinion, it's got the word "tragedy" written all over it. an accident waiting to happen. but oftentimes, we're either complacent or reactive in a sense that we have to wait for 6 lives to be taken away before we act on it.

I guess we'll just blame it on the rain..

Negotiations with owners of private properties that canals in Mabolo traverse and the non-implementation of the City Hall’s drainage master plan delayed efforts to improve drainage in the barangay.

More than 500 families living along rivers and creeks in Mabolo alone continue to face risk.

City Hall, though, is determined to implement a massive clearing of rivers and creeks. It will ask those living nearby to evacuate their homes.

As early as March this year, the City Government, through Councilor Gerardo Carillo, identified at least 100 families that should leave their homes.

Carillo had said the houses along the riverbanks and under bridges must be demolished because City Hall fears flashfloods and landslides, following the onset of the La Ñina phenomenon.

He specifically cited those shanties along Kinalumsan River in Barangay Mambaling and along Guadalupe River.
